In December 1938, the then lagerführer Arthur Rödel (in 38 SS-Sturmbannführer) prisoners were invited to compose a so-called "camp song". Remuneration for prisoners was announced in the amount of 10, -RM. The prisoners submitted several dozen proposals, and in the end the song of the prisoners Löhner-Bed (text) and Leopoldi (music) was chosen. Löhner-Beda later died in one of the Auschwitz branch camps, Leopoldi was released from the KZ before the outbreak of war and emigrated to the United States. . Lyrics of the song as the prisoners had to sing it on the orders of the SS:
If the day remains, it is the sun, the colonies reach the day of the mill hinein in the gray morning. And the forest is black and the sky red and we carry a piece of bread in a bread bag and in the heart, in the heart the sorrows.
Refr .: O Buchenwlad, I can't dismiss you, weil du mein Schicksal bist. For those who may be the first to measure, how beautiful is freedom! After the Buchwald forest, we do not have any collars, and he was also a schicksal, we want trotzdem and to life, this is the day: then we are free, we want to live life, this is the day: then we are free!
And the blood is hot and the girl gets cold, and the wind can be read, and I have to, if you are, yes, you are just stupid! And the stones are hard, but our feast, and we bring the spit and spatula with, and in the heart, in the heart the love.

And the night is short, and the day is long, after a song, the home sang: we don't want to rob us! Halte Schritt, Kamerad, and not the Mut, this we carry the will to life in the blood and in the heart, in the heart the leaves.

Free translation Das Buchenwaldlied translated by Zd.Koňák for M. Moulis's book "To byl Buchenwald"
Buchenwald song
When the day wakes up with the first dawn in long columns in the morning still fogs I drag into the toil daily. The sky is red over the black forest - I carry a slice of bread in my pocket and heart worried.
Ref .: Memories of Buchenwald hardly fade, for he has given us destiny. Only he who leaves once, he may say what freedom is. We, Buchenwald, do not blame fate, our days pass by the wires. But we want to live because we know that the day will come when we will be free. But we want to live, and we know that the day will come when we will be free.
The forest whispers about you, my girl, the distance swept over us as waves - only let your faithfulness live! The shovels are on our shoulder. Our step is harder, harder than stones and in the heart, in the heart, love sings to us.

Memories of Buchenwald ........
The night is so short and the day so long. Do you hear that song? That home says: Courage boys! Survive and live! Come on as best you can. Because we carry the will to live in our blood and in the heart, in the heart faith.

The Buchenwald camp was one of the older facilities in which, in addition to racial prisoners (later arrivals), former political prisoners, anti-fascists and, in addition, criminals worked. The situation in such camps was characterized by the domination of the criminals (if they were there), another significant group used to be political (they usually stayed here for a long time and formed their own organizations). Czech university students and other political prisoners were also interned in Buchenwald, often since 1939. They, along with German political prisoners, were behind the events of "taking over" the camp at the end of the war.
