In 6 initiated a project proposal for the development of a new transporter for armored grenadiers by sending guidelines with the required specifications WaPrüf 6 on 21.11.1941.


Specifications:

- the front armor should be 30 mm thick, the sides and rear armor should withstand penetrating rifle ammunition
- the vehicle should be as light as possible - the weight reduction and the required durability of the vehicle should be achieved by using a structure with inclined armor
- low profile, the maximum height should be 1700-1800 mm
- high ground clearance of at least 400 mm
- low specific pressure on the soil due to high permeability to snow, mud, sand
- range 400-500 km
- the load capacity should be at least 2500-3000 kg, the total weight of the vehicle should not exceed 10 tons
- the vehicle should be able to carry 12 people, including the driver and front passenger
- crew exit should be in the rear of the vehicle (rear door)
- the vehicle should have the highest possible wading capacity (the driver's visor should be placed as high as possible)
- the design should take into account easy access to the engine and transmission, easy repair/replacement of all components and variability in the installation of equipment, including weapons, ammunition and radio equipment, including the antenna
- the vehicle should be fully tropicalized to temperatures of + 60 °
- the vehicle should be resistant to winter conditions up to -50 °
- the vehicle should be equipped with crew heating
- the vehicle was to be equipped with a towing device
- the vehicle was to be manufactured without the use of scarce materials
- the vehicle was to comply with noise class 0
- a special requirement was the possibility of installing a removable roof for, for example, command vehicles, ambulance, or radio vehicle


Development of full band M.S.P. (Mittlere Schützen Panzerwagen) was assigned to Auto-Union. Throughout 1942, specifications were clarified between Auto-Union and OKH WaPrüf 6 Gr.III.
As of January 28, 1943, the following requirements were entered:
- maximum vehicle width: 2500 mm
- maximum vehicle height: 1815 mm
- body width: 1620 mm
- belts: Kgs 63/360/90
- armor: front - 30 mm, sides (vertical) - 14.5 mm, sides (oblique) - 8 mm, butt - 8 mm, bottom - 6 mm, bottom (under the driver) - 14.5 mm
- engine: Maybach HL 50 or Horch R 8


At another meeting of representatives of Auto-Union and WaPrüf 6 and In 6 on February 6, 1943, it was stated that the new vehicle should not only be a transporter for armored grenadiers and engineers, but should be a multifunctional vehicle (tractor, armament carrier, reconnaissance and ambulance vehicles, etc.). .).
The first mention of the nickname "Kätzchen" was found in the report of the General Staff of 15.2.1943. There was an effort to speed up the production of Kätzchen, the conversion of production from Sd.Kfz.250 and Sd.Kfz.251 was to be completed by the end of 1943. Gradually, the production of half-belt transporters was to be reduced and in the summer of 1944 was to be fully stopped.
However, during the preparation, there were concerns that the new type needed more steel to produce than it was at Sd.Kfz.251. On the other hand, the simplification of the shape of the new vehicle, which did not have such a complicated construction as Sd.Kfz.251, was appreciated. There was also a discussion about the gearbox used. It was to be supplied by Zahnradfabrik (ZF), but there was a possibility to use the new Franke transmission. The choice, at least for the prototypes and the first vehicles, fell on the ZF. There were also concerns about the unsuitability of using a low-power Maybach engine.
On April 1, 1943, the Auto-Union company reported to its Werk Horch plant that it had received an order to build a wooden Kätzchen model in the M 1: 1, but without the chassis. ZF was to deliver five gearboxes by 10/1943. At the same time, the construction of five prototypes was to begin, depending on the arrival of armor plates from their manufacturers. The planned delivery of the first body was at the end of 7/1943.
At the stakeholder meeting of the project, it was stated that the lower front armor will be only 14.5 mm thick instead of the planned 30 mm. Both engines should be available so that there would be a replacement if either were not suitable.The design of the chassis took into account the wheels of a similar shape and arrangement as the medium tank Panther. The design of the wheels was given to Demag, the rubber tires were to be supplied by Continental. Objections to the use of Kgs 63/360/90 belts which were not suitable for a vehicle of this type were consulted with Ritscher of Hamburg, which proposed 400 mm wide belts. Several types of belts have been assessed and belts from sWS have been recommended (Gg 25/500/180). The final decision was the Kgs 24/400/180 belts.
The company Auto-Union was also commissioned to create a prototype, which was to be equipped with the company's chassis BMM ( LT vz.38 ). BMM[/url] should supply the required components. The prototype thus modified was labeled Kätzchen K2. At a discussion between Auto-Union and WaPrüf 6 (Kniepkamp, Bader and Siebler), Oberbaurat Kniepkamp was not thrilled with the use of the chassis and advised that this version would not be produced because such a vehicle would not be able to meet the specified specifications. Kniepkamp suggested that Bader modify the prototype chassis VK 9.01 located on the Kummersdorf test site. However, Auto-Union representatives urged that the second prototype be built with a chassis BMM. Kniepkamp suggested using a standard engine Maybach HL 42 from Sd.Kfz.251. However, Auto-Union designers opposed the insufficient performance of this engine. Kniepkamp agreed to use Maybach HL 66 engines and Horch engines in the first vehicles. He also said that he preferred the use of the Maybach HL 50 engine also because it was in development Maybach HL 100 (double HL 50). Even in this case, the designers were not satisfied with the engine's performance and preferred the Horch engine (Horch was part of the Auto-Union concern).
Prototypes K1 and K2 were completed and ready for testing at the Kummersdof polygon in 2/1944. The third prototype (K3), which was to represent the final form was to be completed in 3-4/1944.
The Auto-Union record from May 30, 1944 speaks of an army order to draw up a design for a 12 cm mortar for the Kätzchen K1. The company Rheinmetall-Borsig prepared drawing documentation (drawing HSKB 88726 from 1.6.1944 and HSKB 88728 from 2.6.1944) proposing the possibility of mounting 12 cm Gr.Wr.42.
The report on the comparative tests of prototypes in Kummersdorf from 1.8.1944 states that the K1 has better driving characteristics with the suspension of the wheels by torsion bars. When driving off-road, the prototype K2 with a leaf spring suspension had poor driving characteristics. However, it was not about passability, but the comfort of the crew, who above the speed of 15 km/h was not able to stop the movement of the vehicle through terrain obstacles. With the more suitable K1 suspension, this was possible in the range from 20 to 40 km/h. Therefore, the K1 prototype was preferred.
16.8.1944 Werk Horch presented a lafetation design 12 cm mortar Gr.Wr.42 (ZKB 10548/0). Because the weapon was not delivered by Rheinmetall-Borsig, only the mortar base was mounted and the weapon itself was replaced by a wooden model. The vehicle was ready for shooting tests on August 7, 1944, but as of August 27, 1944, the company Rheinmetall-Borsig did not supply some missing parts, such as the base.
More information about the fate of the prototypes is not available to me. The Kätzchen program of the Auto-Union company has been transformed into the Vollketten Aufklärungsfahrzeug program, which was discussed at a meeting of Auto-Union representatives and OKH representatives on 5.5.1944.

K1 with new steel running wheels. Although the wheel had a steel hoop, there was a rubber hoop underneath. The original wheels were being damaged by the tracks and the new wheels could be smaller and not suffer too much wear. The final version of the K3 was to have such wheels. The interesting thing about these pictures of the car is that the left side has the original rubber-rimmed wheels and the right side has the tested steel wheels.
