He was born on 24 February 1857 in Vienna in the family of Major General Josef Mayerhofer von Grünbühel (*24.8.1816 +21.7.1873) and spent his childhood in the cities where his father served - Venice, Mantova, Padua, Verona and Villafranca. He studied at the Schottengymnasium in Vienna and later at the Theresian Military Academy in Vienna New Town, from which he graduated in 1878 and was assigned to Infantry Regiment No. 7 in Innsbruck. Later he served for several years as commander of the one-year volunteer school in Klagenfurt, and after his promotion to captain (Hauptmann) he was transferred to Infantry Regiment No. 100. In 1897 he was transferred to the "Belgians" - Infantry Regiment No.27 and served as commander of the school of one-year volunteers in Leibach. In 1901 promoted to the rank of major in Infantry Regiment No.79 (Otavac and Fiume), in 1903 he became commander of the infantry cadet school in Strasse in Styria ( the photo dates from this period) and later of the infantry cadet school in Maribor. In 1908 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Franz Joseph, in 1910 he was promoted to the rank of Colonel (Oberst) in Infantry Regiment No. 23, a year later he was already serving in Infantry Regiment No. 89. At the beginning of 1914 he was appointed commander of the 18th Infantry Brigade with which he entered the fighting of the First World War - in August 1914 he was promoted to the rank of Major General (GM) and for the battles (infantry regiments No.11 and No.73) on the Drina he was decorated with the Knight's Cross of the Order of Leopold with war decoration. Later he served in the rear until the end of the war as a general in the inspection of prisoner of war camps based in Graz. In March 1918 he was promoted to the rank of tit.
