Pope Francis on Monday expressed support for military action in order to stop the attacks of muslim radicals from the Islamic state on religious minorities in Iraq. His statement is in contradiction with the usual promptings of the Vatican to the non-use of weapons and force. In the last 100 years the supreme leaders of the catholic church rejected any military intervention, including the first world war, second world war, the war in Vietnam, and most recently the us invasion of Iraq in 2003.
