Cf. H. M. Pollak was 6.6.1944 together with the 13th Parachute Battalion landed in Normandy. He led the first platoon that cleared Ranville after the landing. He personally shot several enemy soldiers, heedless of his own danger. During the fighting he was constantly alert, thinking of his men, himself being wounded more than once in the leg and shoulder from an artillery shell a few days later.

Despite his wounds, he returned to the battalion as an intelligence dôstander. During the Battle of Bure 2-4 January 1945, he fulfilled his duties and constantly volunteered for reconnaissance patrols under enemy fire. The information he obtained in this way was of high value. He was wounded again by an artillery shell in February 1945 at Maas.

Although he was not yet fully recovered, he took part in an airborne landing with a battalion on the Rhine on 24 March 1945. Heedless of enemy fire he was the first man on the scene and after a brief encounter with the enemy he personally captures 40 prisoners. Until the end of the campaign he was a shining example and his service went above and beyond the call of duty.
