The L.K.B.L.K.B. project figured in the company's [url=/topic/view/117380/Friedrich-Krupp-AG-1903-1992]Krupp reports in fiscal years 1935/36 as a light tank project for Bulgaria. It was to use the La.S. (Pz.Kpfw.I) platform and was to be powered by an 8-cylinder engine from Krupp. The engine had been in development since about 1932, and work on the tank drawings began on 5 October 1936. At a meeting of Krupp representatives with Waffenamt representatives, it was recorded in a report dated 6.11.1936 that a test platform with this engine was being tested at Kummersdorf. It was just a platform with weights simulating the weight of the superstructure and turret. This prototype was later loaned for comparative tests with a platform powered by the classic Maybach engine used in production La.S. (Pz.Kpfw.I). This prototype so impressed army officials that a programme to develop this tank was to be launched under the designation L.K.B. 1. The Pz.Kpfw.I Ausf.A (3.Serie/La.S.) platform was to be used, but the turret and superstructure were to come from Pz.Kpfw.I Ausf.B. The prototype was built in 2/1937 and subsequently underwent trials. It reached the Krupp factory in Essen in 3/1937. A report dated 3/13/1937 states that the superstructure used bore the serial number 69 (manufactured by Krupp) and the turret number 1392 (manufactured by Deutsche Edelstahlwerke). The rear part of the hull in the engine compartment was modified (it was adapted to the new engine). The project subsequently developed into L.K.B. 2.
