Tanky 1. československé samostatné obrněné brigády

Diskuse

Since there is a certain hunger among us for documentation of 1st platoon armament, I am attaching photos of Cromwells of the 3rd Battalion of the 1st platoon from the parade in Sušice. Type and other details are in the photo captions.

To Palic: good post. But I'll move it to another section. This one is for technical information only. Which means collecting the TTD of each tank type and dividing them by manufacturer's country. But as I say good post - I personally am happier for one post about our soldiers than for 100 posts about German army Smile .

I'm not angry at all, on the contrary, a common soldier has to be supervised - and by the way, I'm not worried about copyright at all, I have the original photos. I hope that makes Scotty happy.

I think that the hunger is more hungry than the tanks for the other techniques of our brigade, the tanks are, albeit imperfectly, processed, but it is scarce about other vehicles and weapons. For example, trucks are "plowed fields. Don't you want to plow it? (Not plow it up Smile)

Hi Paliči et al.,
thanks for the link and photos! I don't like to talk to you about it, I still swim a lot in armored vehicles and the history of ground units (as I have mapped the air force) and I very much welcome any information about the 1st ČSOB. I would like to build a "cross-section" technique used by the Czechoslovaks, especially during the siege, but I have not yet found much evidence.
As a modeler, I would like to paint the most colorful pieces, the ideal example is M5A1 - Goblin (camouflage, designation, combat name, etc.), however, as for Cromwell and Firefly I found only a few pictures and photos in Mr. Procházka's articles in HPM. Can someone please advise me and refer me to some sources? I have a lot of messes about the Shermans at all. Did ČSOB only have Firefly or normal Shermans?
And how was it with the other technology? E.g. with 25pdr howitzers, anti-tank cannons (6pdr, 17 pdr.) etc. ??
Thank you for your patience with the newcomer Smile

Photos of 25-pound-drawn Quadas are from the show in Prague, as well as the 40 mm Bofors

Great, thanks for the information .. Can you please guide me where to find the photos? So far, I have found photos of 25pdr and Quad here in the section weapons and technology, artillery, GB. However, I somehow miss why the howitzers and quads have different designations? There are 74 in red-blue on the Quad, that fits me to the ČSOB artillery battalion, but there are 43 in the red howitzer - do you have any idea why?
URL : https://www.valka.cz/Tanky-1-ceskoslovenske-samostatne-obrnene-brigady-t16886#99285 Version : 0
I admit that no (I did not deal with the structure of the units) here the mallet will advise you. The photos were published in ATM and I think in other publications as well, the howitzer is uniformly green (unfortunately). I can't remember where, so I don't want to say it one hundred percent. If you want to enjoy yourself as a modeler, try to grind into the armament in the Middle East and especially in Africa when defending Tobruk, it's quite an interesting mix. (models are made mostly as resins)

Sket: If you mean the photos of "Lešanské pětacetacítka" taken at last year's Bahne, then don't take them into account. The designation of this kit is somewhat confusing and should indicate some kind of English division. Since last year's artillery day in Lešany, the set has been provisionally marked as belonging to ČSOB.
The Lešany Museum is full of similar kicks and nonsense. Unfortunately. A wonderful example is "Cromvell" with the inscription Lidice ...

ČSOB. she also had 17 pound anti-tank guns in her arsenal, they can be seen beautifully in the photos from the May parade in Prague.

I would like to know how it was with this brigade and loot weapons and equipment (what, for example, they welcomed, or if they did not bring anything home).
URL : https://www.valka.cz/Tanky-1-ceskoslovenske-samostatne-obrnene-brigady-t16886#99302 Version : 0
To Goblin:
Man, it started to bother me, I looked at the photos of the "twenty-five pounds" here in the war, and I was pretty scared.
Look, Elf, the howitzer's shield isn't "43" on the red field, but on the red-blue ... and that corresponds to the "formation sign" for the infantry division's artillery regiment, "74" on the red-blue corresponds to the "formation sign" for the artillery. armored division regiment. To this can only be added that the brigade was built as an infantry for some time (I will not say exactly until, but the designation, for example, on the Brencarriers corresponded to it - "111") and then the "43" on the "artillery background" would be appropriate.
During the reorganization, of course, the vehicles were to be relabelled immediately - and can we be sure that this has always happened? Then one would not be surprised even by the combination of "43" on a howitzer and "74" on a tractor ... And of course this is just a theory - exactly as Pavel Bláha says - there are a lot of mistakes in Lešany and one sometimes wonders what the thicknesses are. ...

And by the way - the armored brigade did not have an artillery battalion, but a division (the equivalent for a unit corresponding to the organization of the battalion structure, usually for artillery, anti-aircraft artillery, missile vo ...).

If anyone ever used in connection with the artillery of our units abroad terminus technikus "battalion", it was after the creation of an anti-aircraft regiment from our unit in the Middle East (commanded by Col. Karel Václav Klapálek) and in its structure were 3 battalions - This designation was retained by our artillerymen as a "memory of the infantry tradition".

Citation - Standa :

I wonder how it was with this brigade and the loot armaments and equipment (what they welcomed, for example, or if they even brought something back to the homeland).

Some of the Cromwell tanks may have been with the tank unit stationed in Hranice after the war, where HSS Buršík also served.

I have the information from a memoirist and believe it is based on truth. Until when these tanks were there, however, I no longer know.
URL : https://www.valka.cz/Tanky-1-ceskoslovenske-samostatne-obrnene-brigady-t16886#99318 Version : 0
According to another witness, the armament of the brigade (at that time already out of use) ended up in the base in Stráž pod Ralskem and from there it allegedly liquidated, if it is true or just I do not know the confused memory, I personally take the memories of witnesses with a reservation.
As for Lešany (but also other museums) it is necessary to take the local camouflage with a large reserve, a classic example is the tank T-34/76 with a turtle tower marked as Polish, despite the fact that Poles have been reporting for about ten years that they never had a tank of this type and the only relationship is that the machine originally stood on a monument to Polish tankers. But similar cookies can be found elsewhere.

Citace - bitaxe :

Fotograficky to doložit nemůžu Wink

TO Pavel Blaha: Damn, what's wrong with Cromwell Lidice? I just thought it would be a nice model piece, which will be the easiest to see in the original .. Sad

TO Palič: Yeah, sorry, I'm blind as a patron, 43 is in red-blue. However, I looked at an article in the old HPM (ing. Svoboda), where the marking of ČSOB vehicles is quite well dissected and 43 were not used by any of the Czechoslovak units (at least if the article is relevant).
Add artillery battalion .. Yes, I'm looking at it now, sorry for the mistake. I saw an artillery regiment in the schedule (I don't know a more detailed breakdown) and I guess it merged with the organization of the 200th Anti-Aircraft.

TO Bitaxe: Yeah, Africa and ME are quite interesting. Smile Personally, I would be most interested in the fate of the Czechoslovak Valentine (as perhaps the only tank). Does anyone know anything about this?
Add Lešany .. That I'm so curious, what's so wrong about that? I would not like to fix some nonsense ... Smile

at least one Valentine and one Matilda were used at Tobruk (but it was probably never put into operation, sometimes it is written about another Valentine, but it is not certain whether there really were two (rather only one maybe repaired several times) tanks certainly remained in place and were probably taken over by the British. A lot of loot artillery was used (such as Škoda howitzers that were captured by the Italians) in the defense of Tobruk, which was, as far as I know, left in place. Valentine even had CS characters on the tower Smile

I have several photos and I will publish them occasionally. Otherwise, something to organize the brigade.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE OF THE CZECHOSLOVAKIAN INDEPENDENT ARMOR BRIGADE IN GREAT BRITAIN IN 1943

CIABG - Czechoslovak Independent Armored Brigade Group
The reason for the reorganization of the originally armored infantry brigade was to make the best use of relatively small units without larger reserves in the most acceptable independent unit. Initially, the arrival of more troops from both the protectorate and other countries was expected, but this assumption did not materialize to the extent expected. Only the arrival of soldiers from the Middle East made up for the missing reserves and made it possible to create a unit capable of combat deployment. Cs. the brigade was incorporated into the British Armed Forces and as such was built according to British regulations. Assuming further strengthening of the existing numbers of troops, the organizational structure was built according to the tables intended for the British Independent Brigade Group (Independent Brigade Group). The official name of Czechoslovakia. The unit was the Czechoslovak Independent Armored Brigade Group CIABG (the name remained unchanged at all times despite the organizational changes), initially also the Czechoslovak Independent Tank Brigade Group. during the contact between the individual units of the brigade, the Czech name Czechoslovak Independent Armored Brigade was used, initially also the Tank Brigade. The numbers were adapted to the capabilities and numbers of men at the brigade headquarters. Some units built by Czechoslovakia. brigades would otherwise belong to a higher unit (division), others had reduced numbers. The then British Independent Armored Brigades were of two types: "A" was composed of three tank regiments or battalions, one artillery regiment, motorized battalion and field ambulance, Brigade type "B" lacked a motorized battalion. Both differed in both organizational and vehicle designations. Organizational structure of Czechoslovakia. brigade was built according to the British brigade type "A" with the addition of some units belonging to a higher unit. In July 1944, the organization and designation of the brigade adapted to the structure used in British divisions. The numbers continued to be reduced and by the end it was not possible to reach the expected numbers for the higher unit. The then British Armored Division consisted of one armored brigade of three tanks and one motorized battalion. Motorized or infantry brigades on cars with three battalions, from the artillery brigade with two field, one anti-tank and one anti-aircraft regiment. The rest of the division consisted of a reconnaissance regiment, two engineer companies, a liaison battalion (4 companies), divisional workshops with a field park, two light field ambulances, two supply transport battalions, a police company and a field post office. Of these numbers never MS. the unit did not reach and the number of units and the number of men did not increase radically until the end of the war. During the reorganization in 1943, the brigade staff was expanded by several officers, but no artillery commanders or chief of medical services were expected. These functions were performed by the commander of the artillery regiment and the commander of the light field ambulance. Brigadier General A. Liška and his deputy Col. were appointed commander of the brigade. K. Klapálek. After K. Klapálek left for the Eastern Front, he was replaced by Col. A. Barovsky-Zeman. The headquarters was run by a brigade staff company with a permanently assigned liaison platoon and a light workshop LD6. The brigade's reconnaissance was provided by the Motorized Reconnaissance Squadron - MIT. He was armed with armored cars and light tanks. Tank battalions had four medium tanks in the command platoon, command and three tank companies (4 companies at the end of the war). The command platoon was equipped with special anti-aircraft tanks Crusader AA, armored personnel carriers, take-off and reloading armored personnel carriers and trucks with 40 tons of supplies. Nine Sherman I.C "Firefly" accompanying tanks with seventeen-pound anti-tank cannons (caliber 76.2 mm) were assigned to protect the battalion rear. The motorized battalion, the so-called brigade infantry, consisted mainly of former members of the 200th MS. Light Anti - Aircraft Regiment - East. The battalion consisted of a command company, a company of accompanying weapons and two motorcycles. The brigade artillery consisted of an artillery regiment of two divisions of two four-part batteries, which were armed with twenty-five-pounder cannon howitzers (caliber 87.6 mm). The anti-tank section consisted of three batteries, in which there were twelve seventeen-pound anti-tank cannons (caliber 76.2 mm). The anti-aircraft battery had 6 Bofors anti-aircraft guns (caliber 40 mm). Light workshops LD 3 were permanently assigned to the artillery regiment, and in the field also the liaison platoon E of the brigade liaison company. The brigade artillery was fully motorized. The engineer company was reduced by one engineer platoon compared to the table states. The company was equipped for earthworks and demining and was also equipped with a motorboat. The bridge platoon was equipped with a Bailey bridge set to establish a bridge with a length of 40 m and a load capacity of 40 tons. The liaison company assigned trained and equipped platoons to headquarters and combat units. The field gendarmerie division, consisting of the transport section and the order section, provided order and traffic activities as well as the investigation of serious crimes. Members of the section were marked with a black sleeve tape with a red inscription "MP". In the field, the unit collected the prisoners and deported them to prison camps. To supplement the team at the tank battalions, a reserve tank company was created, which had the task of training new tank crews to cover combat losses. A replenishment company was created to replenish the team of other specialties, which provided soldiers of other specialties, radio operators, armourers, etc. The supply of provisions, fuel and ammunition was provided by the supply transport section. The division consisted of three companies, a command company, a supply company, workshops and two platoon of backup drivers. Later, the division was expanded by two more companies. The brigade maintained a supply of 130 tons of ammunition, 90 tons of fuel, 60 tons of provisions and 6 tons of equipment carried on three-ton trucks. At the end of the war, this situation increased to 360 tons of ammunition, 180 tons of fuel and 180 tons of provisions and equipment. Brigade Tank Workshops (BTD) were designed for medium repairs of tanks, armored vehicles, cars, motorcycles, weapons and radios. BTD had a command, storage and rescue platoon, tank, automobile, weapons and radio workshops. A field park equipped with six three-ton cars served to supply the brigade with spare parts and weapons material. Light workshops (LD) were permanently assigned to combat units and were used to check the technical condition and for routine repairs. They gathered damaged equipment in the field. The light field ambulance had the means to set up an outpost and move the wounded to an army hospital. The field post mediated business and private contact between the brigade and the post office. The field treasury took over and distributed the money to individual departments, and also served as a savings bank and exchange office. The educational platoon took care of education, culture and enlightenment, published a cyclostyled (copied) daily "Our Newspapers". The liaison group served for continuous contact with the "Lision Headgnartes" - the British liaison headquarters assigned to the Czechoslovak brigade. The Field Court and the Prosecutor's Office were the first seat and prosecutor's office. He dealt with all crimes except murder, homicide and violent fornication in the British Kingdom. The convicts were placed in British prisons (the brigade did not have its own prison). The replacement body and training center was directly subordinated to the Ministry of National Defense MNO, later to the main headquarters. It took care of the records of military persons, the records of the fallen and the dead and their property. The body gathered new gates who were training at the training center. The garrison town of the Spare Body was Sonthend on Sea, the commander was then Lt. Col. Josef Brůha. The Czechoslovak Tank Training Center trained 600 officers and teams in three courses. He was the center commander. Lt. Col. Jaroslav Blavic and was established at the 54th British School Regiment in the Bernard Castle military camp. The clerical service at the brigade was performed by three clergymen: Roman Catholic Lt. Hugo Vaníček, Evangelical Lt. Jan Michalec and Rabbi Hanuš Rebenwurzel. In 1945, the brigade had military numbers in the following states: 6,163 men, 96 guns, 273 motorcycles, 1,883 cars, 307 tanks and 278 armored personnel carriers.

I would like to bother you once again with a question about modeling materials. I managed to get a part of the decal sheet for ČSOB machines, specifically for the M5A1 Stuart "Šotek" and for the Cromwell MK IV "Tonča". Unfortunately, I have no further information on them. Does anyone please have at least a sketch, but better a picture or photo of the mentioned machines? Especially with "Goblin" I would need a camouflage layout.
Thanks a lot for any feedback, feel free to post to orc@volny.cz

So colleagues, it's been a few days since the culmination of the May celebrations, I expected someone to call, but given the general silence, at least I would call for sure.

I would like to know your opinion on what surprised me a lot and what I heard a lot of different opinions from clearly positive to absolutely negative.
This is a Cromwell in the colors of ČSOB with the combat name "FAUST", which was on display in Pilsen at a static demonstration and as part of a column on a low loader. It should be noted that I did NOT see him LIVE !!!

In the meantime, I will present opinions from opposite sides of the spectrum and I will leave my opinion to the end with permission.
1) Absolutely NEGATIVE: it's definitely not mobile and the tower is not original, it's just ...
2) absolutely POSITIVE: they put the vehicle together from the wreck and maybe they will put it into operation, if it is true that the tower is a replica, so really hilarious ...

I completely disagree with the opinion 1), because even famous museums that have sufficient (financial, material and human) resources have a certain (substantial) percentage of exhibits in a stationary state ... and if the tower is actually built "from scratch" in the modeling scratchbuilt, then I smack, because that's the purest essence of courage, determination and enthusiasm, the ability to work and ... enough - I just hope and believe that it's not "out of sight", but with deep enough background one thing: if the tower is really "scratch", then the boys really painted ... experts from Lešany "- who are running their Cromwell, but somehow lacks a command tower and marking as such is quite a flight ... ( or has something changed?)

I would like to agree with the opinion 2) and say flatly that I admire the group and I believe that sooner or later Faust will run on his own (even if he should be motorized similarly to "Lešanská Pz.IV with a heart from the Tatras").
According to the photos, the tower is not made of gutter sheet metal and armor welding is not fun ...
I myself have had the pleasure of "sitting" some modern tracked vehicles in the past, and I also blew off the T-34 (a bet with an armored driving teacher during my studies) and so I can imagine that those who revive Faust will do everything to so that at least occasionally (for many people incomprehensible) they enjoy beating belts and cleaning machines ... and I kind of envy them.

And don't hit me when you probably already know that I'm "burdened" with this type.

Veškeré operační tanky měli mít koncem války noví typ velitelské věžičky, a to tanky Cromwell,, Sherman, Churchill a Comet. Brigády to prováděly u BTD (brigádní těžké dílny)

Přikládám tedy fotografie velitelské věžičky Churchillu Mk.VII z bovingtonského muzea a A 34 Comet z vojenského muzea v Drážďanech… s označením umístění jednotlivých periskopů červenými šipkami.
