It is a continuation of the development of the RT-2PM Topol, RT-2PM2 Topol-M series of strategic ICBMs and is a direct modernization of the RS-24 Jars.
According to unconfirmed information, the RS-26 missiles are to be equipped with several hypersonic warheads.
So far (2003/11/28) 4 test launches have been conducted, 1 failed and 3 successful:
- 1st test - from the Pleseck polygon to the Kura polygon - 28.09.2011 - unsuccessful
- 2nd test - from Pleseck to Kura - 23.05.2012 - successful, distance more than 6700 km
- 3rd test - from Kapustin Yar polygon to Balchash polygon - 24.10.2012 - successful
- 4th test - from Kapustin Yar polygon to Balchash polygon - 06.06.2013 - successful
All launches were performed from a mobile launcher.
About the name RS-26 Rubezh / KU-26 Avangard:
Different sources have different takes on the name of the missile / missile complex.
Personally, I am of the opinion that it will probably be RS-26 Rubezh in the final version.
