FRA - RLS Thomson-CSF MPR

Thomson-CSF MPR

MPR = Medium Power Radar = medium power radar

General description:
The Thomson-CSF MPR radar is a stationary 3D radar station for backbone radar networks, whose individual components are housed in a multi-story building.
The station uses a 20 MW pulsed power klystron as the power element.
The RLS operates in the impingement mode, the radiation characteristics of the antenna system are shaped by polarization into 12 beams in the position angle, which allows linear sensing of the space in the position angle, azimuthal sensing is realized by rotation of the whole antenna system.
The shape of the radiation pattern at the position angle is cosecans.
The receiver has a two-stage intermediate frequency receiver, the 1st intermediate frequency is 150 MHz, the 2nd intermediate frequency is 30 MHz.

Basic development:
The basic development took place between 1969 and 1973.

Production:
France using modules from AEG Telefunken and Siemens

Modernisation:
1979 - RLS was retrofitted with a digital interference protection system and radome dome
1982 - The high frequency tract was equipped with a new type of permactron

Basic technical and tactical characteristics:
Frequency band : S (E/F) - 2 - 4 GHz
Search pulse repetition time (PRT): 4 milliseconds
Search pulse repetition frequency (PRF): 250 Hz
Search pulse length (τ): 4 microseconds
Receive time: 3132 microseconds
Dead time: 800 microseconds
Pulse power: up to 20 MW
Medium power: up to 40 kW
Long range:

Note:
Currently, the Thomson-CSF MPR RLSs are gradually being replaced by a new RLS from Thales Raytheon Systems Ground Master 400 (GM 400), for example, the German Air Force will steal all 6 Thomson-CSF MPR RLSs by the end of 2015 (see news 13.11.2013 - Germany's first Ground Master 400 radar station commissioned)
