In youth vyštudoval school Felsted. In the year 1924 is pridelený to the Royal námornej pechote, where vykonáva funkciu dôstojníka telesnej preparation.

During the 2. st. army skúži from 1943 as commander of 46. Commando and since 1944 as commander of the 3. brigade commando in Burme and Hong Kong.

29.12.1944 3. the brigade under his command vykonáva vylodenie on the island Akyab in Burme. 22-23.1.1945 beside úspešnú defense against the Japanese forces on the dimension 170 (Battle of Hill 170), that bola mimoriadne dôležitá in the framework of the campaign in the field of Arakanu.

After the end of the war sa stave his favorite kitty inštruktorom at the school combined operácii in Fremington and subsequently velitelom 3. Brigade Commando with that pôsobí on Malte, Hong Kong and Malaysia.

In 1951 the sa stave velitelom compensation (training strediko?) Royal námornej pechoty (the Royal Marines Depot) in Deal and nasledovného year náčelníkom staff and napokon in 1955 velitelom Royal námornej pechoty.
