M1917 Eihandgranaten

This grenade was created in response to a request for a grenade with a greater possibility of throwing it into the distance than the Kugelhangranat used until then. The resulting grenade was significantly lighter (300 - 320 grams) and its explosive weighed 30 grams (usually it was black gunpowder, at the end of the war allegedly Amatol). The new grenade was produced in several versions and by different factories (therefore it is not possible to state the exact dimensions). But it always had a cast body (steel) into which the igniter was screwed. There were several types of detonators, these were timed detonators whose activity was started by the soldier unscrewing the lid (pictured left) on which was stamped a detonation delay (here 5 seconds) under it was a string with a ball (for better grip) by pulling this string a friction match was ignited which ignited the delay composition, the soldier threw a grenade towards the target after pulling out the string. The described throw distance is about 40 - 50 meters. The effect of the shards was up to 50 meters. The detonators had a delay of 5 to 8 seconds (usually 5 seconds) and one detonator was a combination of time and impact (not very used). The grenades were packed in boxes of 30 pieces, the matches were transported separately.
Grenades were introduced as early as 1916 and we often come across the designation M.1916 (or M.16), ie Muster 1916 referring to this period.
