Bertram Home Ramsay was born on 20. January 1883 in London. His father was brigadier general William Alexander Ramsay, mother Susan Newcombe Minchener. Attended Colchesterské the royal grammar school in 1898 he entered the Royal navy. First served on the terraced ship HMS Britannia, after a year on the cruiser HMS Crescent.
