History Makigumo[/heading]

After putting into service 14. march 1942 was Makigumo included in the 10. a division of destroyers (第十駆逐隊 / だいじゅうくちくたい / dai-džú-kučikutai) 10. torpedo squadron (第十水雷戦隊 / だいじゅすいらいせんたい / dai-džú-suirai-sentai), which was assigned to 1. airline fleet (第一航空艦隊 / だいいちこうくうかんたい / dai-ichi-kókú-kantai).

4. June 1942 a vessel účasnilo battle of Midway in which has been entrusted with the task of protection of the badly damaged and sinking of the aircraft carrier Hirjú, while the rest of the units 10. squadrons had subsided to the west. Later suffered minor damage due to the collision with the sinking aircraft carrier while taking part of her crew.

5. June at 05:10 was Makigumo entrusted with the task to end the agony of a ruined Hirjú, which it has done by firing a single torpedo into the starboard side Hirjú. The torpedo struck the ship in the middle directly under the bridge, whereupon the Makigumo at full speed heading west with the intention to catch up with the receding of the rest 10. division. Hirjú but remained still a few hours on the surface than the stern first sank.

During the Battle of Midway took Makigumo on board the crew of a u.s. aircraft SBD-3 Dauntless 6-S-5 (BuNo 03224) from VS-6 from the aircraft carrier CV-6 USS Enterprise, which ran out of fuel near the japanese union. The crew consisted of pilot lieutenant (Ensign) Frank Woodrow O'Flaherty and radio operator / rear gunner Bruno P. Gaido.

15. June were both american airmen by the japanese crew, an angry loss of the aircraft carrier, sentenced to death by drowning. The execution was carried out immediately. Both pilots were attached to a barrel filled with water and thrown into the sea.

27. October 1942 was Makigumo part of the forward union rear admiral Hiroaki Abe in the battle of the islands Santa Cruz. Participated along with the destroyer Akigumo to finish off the damaged and the crew have already abandoned aircraft carriers , THE CV-8 USS Hornet. The crew Makigumo fished out from the sea of Michael M. Glassera – the only surviving member of the crew Readova Avenger T-10 (BuNo 00381) from VT-10 of the CV-6 USS Enterprise. This airman had a but of luck and no execution did not take place. Glasser was placed in a prison camp, where they got to see the end of the war.

13. and 14. November Makigumo participated in the battle of Guadalcanal as part of the Nišimurova bomber command association, which had the task of firing naval guns Henderson airport and thus neutralize them. In the morning was but the japanese union of discovered and attacked by aircraft operating just from the Henderson airport Guadalcanal. Makigumo, however, wasn't hit, and subsequently participated in the takeover of part of the crew affected by the heavy cruiser Kinugasa.

28. November set sail Makigumo from Rabaul in the framework of the Tokyo express, together with the destroyers, Júgumo, Kazagumo and Širacuju. The convoy had to carry to Buny in the eastern part of papua New Guinea 21. part-time job.

29. November the convoy was attacked by aircraft of the USAAF operating from land bases. Makigumo did not suffer any direct hit, but the bombs falling near his torso, causing the on-board fire and a few officers and a sailor were killed and injured. Makigumo was later forced to return back to the base in the Rabaul.

1. February 1943 set sail Makigumo from Shortlandu in the Solomon islands with the task to evacuate the military garrison of the besieged Guadalcanal in the framework of the operation TO. In the 18.20 was the japanese association discovered and attacked by aircraft of USMC operating from the the Henderson airport. The attack involved: 17 dive planes SBD Dauntless, 7 torpedo the Grumman TBF Avenger and 17 fighters - Grumman F4F Wildcat. Due to the large coverage of the convoy a total of thirty fighter aircraft Mitsubishi A6M and effective anti-aircraft fire with the Americans in addition to the one vessel failed, the japanese union of compromise.
In the night after there was a clash of the japanese association with the american fast torpedo boats PT-37, PT-48, PT-59, PT-111, PT-115 PT-123, PT-124. After a short battle and a few fired torpedoes started the u.s. boats to retreat from the fight and Makigumo chased one escaping the boat towards the base at Tulagi. After a few minutes, the chase ended and then return back to the other vessels of the union. At 01.35 hours there was an explosion, which meant for Makigumo death sentence. The cause of the explosion was according to one version, the torpedo, fired again the attacking torpedo boats PT-123, PT-124, or there has been hovering at the naval mine. In the event you place on a mine could be one of 300 min, which during the day lay minonosné destroyers USS Tracy, USS Montgomery and USS Preble. Makigumo sank 3 nautical miles (4.8 km) south-southwest of the island of Savo in position 9°15' e., w., 159°47' v. d. in an Iron strait. Three men of the crew were killed, seven wounded and two missing. Destroyer Júgumo took over 237 survivors, including the captain of the ship Fudžity and arrived Makigumo with a torpedo.

1. march 1943 was a destroyer Makigumo removed from the list of ships of the imperial japanese navy.
