He was born on October 20, 1897 in Seoul in Deoksu Palace as the 7th son of Gojong, Emperor Gwangmu. In 1900, he was given the title of Imperial Prince Yeong and in 1907 he became Crown Prince.

In December 1907, he is taken to Japan to receive a modern education. Here he studies at Gakushūin and at the Imperial Military Academy, graduating on May 25, 1917. He becomes a second lieutenant on December 25, 1917, a lieutenant in April 1920, a captain in July 1923, and a major in August 1928.

In 1910 when Korea is annexed by Japan, Emperor Sunjong is forced to abdicate and is given the tutu of His Royal Highness, Crown Prince of Korea. On 10.6.1926 after the death of Emperor Sunjong and his funeral, he becomes King Ri of Korea.

Prince Yi Eun, also known in Japan as Prince Ri Gin. He served in the Japanese Army as commander of the 59th Infantry Regiment, the 4th Replacement Division, and eventually commander of the 51st Division.

In August 1939 he became a lieutenant colonel, on 1 August 1935 a colonel, on 15 July 1938 a major general and on 2 December 1940 a lieutenant general.

Prince also serves with the Imperial Air Force as a Lieutenant General commanding the 1st Air Army. He is subsequently assigned as an instructor to the Military Staff College. After this period, he is assigned to the Inspector General of Military Training and becomes a member of the Supreme War Council.

In 1945, as Korea becomes independent, he petitions President Syngman Rhee to be allowed to return with his family to his homeland, but his request is denied. The Prince is offered the post of Korean Ambassador to the British Court in 1960, but declines the post due to his health. In 1963, he receives permission from President Park Chung-hee to return with his wife, Crown Princess Bangja. By that time, the Prince is already unconscious due to cerebral palsy and receives treatment at Seoul's St. Mary's Hospital.

He lives out his last years at Nakseon Hall, Changdeokgung Palace, which used to be the residence of the imperial family. 7 years after returning to his homeland, he dies at Nakseon Hall, Changdeok Palace, Seoul.

He is buried in Hongyureung, Namyangju, near Seoul and posthumously given the title Crown Prince Euimin of Korea.
