The canadian company Cassidian, which is the basic manufacturer of laser systems for protection of helicopters and aircraft from heat-guided missiles (AN/AAR-60 MILDS), has developed an analogous system for the protection of vessels, road transport means and aircraft from missiles with laser by entering. The laser protection system of the LDS (Laser Defense System) uses computer system to locate the attacking (laser enlightened) goal, the calculated position of the irradiation of the laser, and then the second laser will blind the source of the radiation. As is generally known, so missiles with laser guidance are not able to without the exact focus to destroy the target.
The current version of the system AN/AAR-60 MILDS (Missile Launch Detection System) provides similar protection against portable anti-aircraft missile complexes (such as Stinger or Igla). After the detection of danger MILDS triggers a separate system that uses laser beams in order to capture the thermal receiver homing head of the missile. Thus the homing head will focus on the heat spot outside the goal (not on the engine or on the hull of the aircraft).
Over the past ten years are continuous discussions about it, that protection helicopters is more efficient - if there are heat traps or laser systems, which are able to confuse the homing head shorad system. The laser systems are about 40% more expensive than the systems utilizing the thermal trap (approximately 2 million USD per one laser system). However, the difference in price of these two systems is relatively quickly reduced. Systems with heat traps use time-tested technology, laser protection systems are constantly being improved and gaining new combat experience, because in the last period there is more to the orientation of the laser systems. It is also a fact that the laser protective systems overcomes the attacking missile much more complexity and extra work still, just when they have the electrical power supply. Against this is the amount of heat traps on board aircraft is limited and their depletion is not system with heat traps offer protection.
