The 1.Serie/La.S.100 subversion, designated as the Pz.Kpfw.II Ausf.a/3 (Fgst.Nr. 20051-20075), had an improved engine cooling system, where the radiator depth was increased by 158 mm. The double-loop spring leaf for the suspension of the running wheels was discontinued on this version.

A characteristic feature of the Pz.Kpfw.II Ausf.a/1-a/3 versions was the mounting of the radiator fan on the rear upper hull section. The running wheels and support pulleys were narrower and had a larger diameter. The next version Pz.Kpfw.II Ausf.b had wider running wheels and smaller diameter support pulleys. The drive wheel also had a specific shape, with four bolts near the centre. The tracks were of the type designation Kgs 67/280/90. The tanks were equipped with Fu 5 + very short wave radio or Fu 2 + very short wave receiver. The tanks had a two-meter antenna.
