Service ( www.vojenstvi.cz):

It was the first to get it into service Division, which was completely rearmed during the first half of the 80s. tank regiment[/url] in Strašice, the following year it was another two companies of the 1st Battalion of the regiment. The remaining two tank battalions of the regiment were rearmed in 1983 and the rearmament of the 2nd Tank Regiment in Rakovník was started. T-72 tanks to the other two battalions of the Rakovnik Regiment and at the same time received a tank battalion 3rd Motorized Rifle Regiment in Louny. 1985 there was a rearmament 21st tank p luku in Žatec, which was the transfer 1. tank division on a new type of battle tank terminated.

Another of the rearmed units in the second half of the 80's.let stala 9. tank division. In 1986 he received T-72 tanks 14. tank regiment in Písek, in 1987 17. tank regiment in Týn nad Vltavou and in 1988 18. tank regiment in Tábor and tank battalion 79. motostřeleckého pluku in Benešov. In 1988, the rearmament of tank regiments of motorized rifle divisions began. He was the first to prepare for the takeover of the new technology 23. tank regiment in Holýšov, whose rearmament was planned for the years 1989 to 1990. Furthermore, the rearmament was assumed 11. tank regiment in Pilsen and 12. tank regiment in Podbořany, which no longer took place.

Crew training of new medium tanks was to take place at 33. tank regiment in Přáslavice, but was eventually launched at 60. tank regiment in Kežmarok, where in 1982 from 33. tank regiment moved 20 T-72 tanks. Since 1986, T-72 tanks have also been included in the training company 10. tank regiment in Martin.

Beginning in 1985, deliveries of command versions of T-72K tanks began. In that year, they were acquired by 1. tank regiment and 3. motostřelecký pluk 1. tank division. A year later, the remaining technology was received by the remaining regiments 1. tank division. In 1987 he received the T-72K 14. tank regiment and in 1988 the remaining tank regiments 9. tank division.

In 1988 came the first rescue tanks VT-72. They were included in all tank regiments 1. tank division.

As of November 30, 1991, it was in the Czechoslovak state. Army reported 815 T-72 tanks, of which 783 in the basic combat version and 32 T-72K command tanks. "

Addition: 23rd Tank Regiment rearmated one battalion in 1989, but the incipient reorganization interrupted further rearmament and the regiment was eventually to be rearmed to T-54/55AM2.

Ammunition used in ČSLA: (there is a minimum of information about specific ammunition used in ČSLA, so the following data should be taken as a guide only)
- cartridge 3VBM-3, 3VBM-6 and 3VBM-7 with anti-tank subcaliber missiles 3BM-9, 3BM-12 and 3BM-15
- anti-tank ammunition bore the designation 125-EPpSv in the Czechoslovak Army (it is not clear whether it is only a copy of a Soviet ammunition or its own design - it is probably a copy of 3BM-15, because against this ammunition reserved a new 125-EPpSv-97)
- 3VOF22 cartridge with 3OF19 shrapnel
- cartridge 3VBK-7 with cumulative projectile 3BK-12M or 3VBK-10 with 3BK-14M
- the cumulative charge bore the designation 125-EPrSv in the Czechoslovak Army (it is not clear whether it is only a copy of a Soviet charge or its own design)
- at the end of the 1980s, a new breakthrough sub-caliber ammunition based on depleted uranium was developed in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, but the development was probably not completed

Total produced pcs: (data from different sources differ, however)
1511 T-72
60 T-72K

I would like to welcome any additions, whether technical or from a service at ČSLA, or dissenting objections to some of the stated data.

Modernization of T-72, M series
- valid only for the territory of the former Czechoslovak Federal Republic

T-72 M a T-72 M1 - modernized vehicle before 1990, according to Soviet documentation,
T-72 M2 and T-72 M2E, the so-called "Moderna" - the modernization was started before the division of Czechoslovakia and completed in Slovakia after its division,
T-72 M3 or T-72 M3CZ - modernization project designed by the Pilsen-based Skoda factory and other companies, development completed,
T-72 M4 or T-72 M4CZ - modernization project designed by ČKD Holding and other companies, vehicle taken into the armament of the Czech Armed Forces,
VT-72 M4CZ - modernization of the VT-72B recovery tank, the vehicle was taken into the armament of the Czech Armed Forces.

The coordination of companies in the development of the T-72 M3 and T-72 M4 tanks was entrusted to VOP-025 from Novojičín, its merit in the completion of the project is indisputable.

In my opinion, VOP-025 was not the initiator of both versions of the T-72 tank modernization. The main driving force was civilian companies: the ČKD, Škoda Plzeň and about twenty others. Their stands at IDET in 1995 and 1997 were proof of this.

The lion's share of the introduction of the T-72 M4 into the armament of the Czech Armed Forces is due to the propulsion unit, which was created by the cooperation of companies: Nimda, Perkins, Allison and ČKD. It is also true that the specialised design and coordination group at ČKD Praha Holding, which was supposed to manage the licensed production at ČKD Motory, was dissolved due to the financial difficulties of these companies.

Diskuse

Well, I guess we won't see this again (unless Poland invades and beats us... Surprised ).

About the versions - I'd be very interested to know how the rearmament to the newer versions went. By that I mean, were the older versions retired and discarded, or were there conversions and upgrades, or were they served concurrently. Personally, given the facts known to me, I lean towards the latter option, because even today in the ACR you can see 72s with narrow side screens a'la the initial version (or are they "retrofitted" with older parts from the stock? The fenders and the visors suffer a lot from traffic). But I'm most curious to know what happened to the 30 examples of the initial supplied version with the TPD-2-49 stereo rangefinder (that's the one without the smokescreens, wheel covers and especially the "second shack" of the rangefinder in front of the commander's hatch).

Last thing - does anyone have a photo of our T-72 with the original hinged wheel and waist fairings? I always have them without, even though this version wore them, but I vaguely remember seeing it armed like this once, as a kid, at a Pakul exhibition in Prague (circa mid 80s).

As far as I know, the older versions were used for training. Specifically, in July 1992 I was on a training exercise in Vyškov and there were x T-72s of the original version (i.e. not "emka") aligned in a park belonging to the VVŠPV.
URL : https://www.valka.cz/T-72-v-Ceskoslovensku-t13783#84186 Version : 0
My main concern is what happened to the original T-72s with stereo range (i.e. the first 31?). If they survived to this day, for example, were they converted (to what version) or ended up in hutches/converted to trainers (like the T-55C-1/2 turretless - is there even such a thing on the T-72?).

Then also those folding rubber imaginary armor plates that were on the early versions - was that ever used on our 72s? As I wrote, I think I saw it in that Pakul, but I can't find it anywhere in the photos.

Citace - Lowpass :

As for the "stereos" - how about trying to "trace" it by their gradual transfer from crew to crew?
For example, I remember that the tpr 68.msp in Vimperk took them (about 3 vehicles together with "Mks") instead of their T-54 and T-55 somewhere around 1989, then again (about a year or two later) they had again "55 "ky AM2 Kladiva, they took them from I don't know where... Then again they had at least 3 "stereos" (still in nice Russian green) among the "Kkami" sometime around 1992 ... that is, they "rearm" twice in 3 years and in the final they handed them over to Strasice.
I also saw them there on one of the Bahns...

Who knows what else, maybe about another crew?

Boční gumy a přídavné pancíře k tomu.

At the time of the division of the republic, I studied at the VVS PVLS in Vyškov in the field of tank troops and as the Slovak students were leaving, there was talk that several tanks were going with them to Slovakia for training purposes. Unfortunately, I don't have it verified. It would be necessary to find out where they were moved to and verify it there.

During our training at the VVS PVLS we were told that a fire control system for the T-72 called "Mittens" had been developed. Similar to the "Hammer" from the T-55AM2. This system was so popular in the then USSR that it was taken from us and after modifications used to modernize their tanks. Unfortunately, despite my best efforts, I have not been able to get to the details of this project. Is there anyone who knows more about it?

In 1993 in connection with the expansion of teaching at the Military Academy SNP Liptovský Mikuláš (former VVTŠ) to the disciplines taught in the Czech Republic, a few (2-3 pcs) T-72 tanks (in addition to other equipment of the ground troops) were delivered to the operating unit of the academy in the barracks at Mokradi. The place of origin is unknown, but as far as I know, the equipment was divided already in 1992, so the transfer of equipment in connection with the graduation and transfer of students should not have occurred.

Service (www.vojenstvi.cz):
'The T-72 medium tank was introduced into the armament of the former CSLA in the early 1980s. The first to receive it was the 1st Tank Division, which was completely rearmed during the first half of the 1980s. In 1981, one company of the 1st Tank Regiment in Strasice was re-equipped, and the following year two more companies of the 1st Battalion of that regiment were re-equipped. In 1983, the remaining two tank battalions of the regiment were re-equipped and the 2nd Tank Regiment in Rakovník was re-equipped. In 1984, T-72 tanks were delivered to the other two battalions of the Rakovnik regiment and at the same time the 3rd Motorized Artillery Regiment in Louny received them. In 1985, the 21st Tank Regiment in Žatec was re-equipped, thus completing the conversion of the 1st Tank Division to the new type of battle tank.

The 9th Tank Division became another of the rearmament units in the second half of the 1980s. In 1986, the 14th Tank Regiment in Písek received T-72 tanks, in 1987 the 17th Tank Regiment in Týn nad Vltavou, and in 1988 the 18th Tank Regiment in Tabor and the tank battalion of the 79th Motorized Artillery Regiment in Benesov. In 1988, the rearmament of the tank regiments of the motorized artillery divisions began. The 23rd Tank Regiment in Holýšov was the first to prepare to receive the new equipment, and its rearmament was planned for 1989-1990. Next, the 11th Tank Regiment in Plzeň and 12th Tank Regiment in Podbořany were supposed to be re-equipped, but they were not.

The training of crews of the new medium tanks was to take place at the 33rd Tank Regiment in Přáslavice, but was eventually started at the 60th Tank Regiment in Kežmarok, where 20 T-72 tanks were moved from the 33rd Tank Regiment in 1982. From 1986, T-72 tanks were also assigned to the 10th Tank Regiment training company in Martina.

Starting in 1985, deliveries of the command versions of the T-72K tanks began. In that year they were acquired by 1st Tank Regiment and 3rd Motorized Artillery Regiment 1st Tank Division. A year later, the remaining regiments of the 1st Panzer Division received the same equipment. In 1987 the T-72K was given to 14th Tank Regiment and in 1988 the remaining tank regiments of 9th Tank Division.

In 1988, the first VT-72 recovery tanks arrived. They were assigned to all tank regiments 1st Tank Division.

As of 30.11.1991, the number of tanks in the Čs. The army reported 815 T-72 tanks, of which 783 in the basic combat version and 32 T-72K command tanks.'

Ammunition used in the CSLA:
- 3VBM3, 3VBM6 cartridge with 3BM9, 3BM12 anti-tank sub-caliber missiles
- 3VOF22 cartridge with 3OF19 triple burst missile
- 3VBK7 cartridge with 3BK12M cumulative projectile

Total units produced:
1511 T-72
60 T-72K

I would welcome any additions, either technical or from service in the CSLA, or dissenting objections to any of the above data.
Pavel Novák

To the above mentioned 12th tp regiment was re-equipped with T 72 tanks in 89 - 90 tanks were taken over from various CSLA units, e.g. Tyn n Vltava and others at that time there was a very curious situation when 12.tp met 3 generations of tanks 10 x T 34, which we took over almost new from NZ in Martina for the filming of the film Tank Battalion, T 54 AM1, which we handed over to Moravia and T72 to which the regiment rearmament - unfortunately T 72 did not get training and assignment to the BoPo and were handed over to other units and 12. tp rearmament this time to T 55 AM2, on which training was carried out until the demise of the 12. tp in 94.

Citation - ja.rici.t :

When we were taught at the PVLS, we were told that a fire control system for the T-72 called the "mace" had been developed by us. Similar to the "Hammer" of the T-55AM2. This system was so popular in the then USSR that it was taken from us and after modifications used to modernize their tanks. Unfortunately, despite my best efforts, I have not been able to get to the details of this project. Can anyone find anyone who knows more about it?

I saw and crawled through the mace during tests at TS Metikalov in I think 86-87 at the time we had the T 54 AM1 hammer seated in 72 and with the mace mounted about like the trabant and mercedes the functions were similar to the hammer now I recall that e.g. SDIO was somewhere else unfortunately I've seen a lot of other tanks since then so I wouldn't like to get it wrong but I think it was the mace that had it in the ejector including the SRV and I also remember that the impression I had was very cool and then when I had the chance to compare e.g. L2 or Chiftein yet the T72 kicker always seemed cool to me. I have somewhere a photo also of the first 3 T72s in SRV but at the time of their acquisition it was not as easy as today.

A granátomety neměla ani jedna.

I don't know how this discussion is old, or whether she's still alive, but the memories of the survivor from the 21. panzer regiment in Žatec...

If I remember correctly, the first tanks T-72, originally from the USSR were in Přáslavicích, several of them were then in Vyškov. Tank in the classroom was, if I remember sestereoskopickým rangefinder, furthermore, there was even one in the command version, also with the stereo. About this tank really doesn't know. The original sight with stereoscopic rangefinder was later exchanged for a standard with a laser, in the framework of the unification.

From Přáslavic then, tanks were moved into the Strašic to 1.tp, that was přezbrojován as the first.

Original soviet machine went to meet lightly - be on the towers welded handles, the machine of Martin is not (one such here in the photos).

If I'm not mistaken, in Strašicích there were even a few machines that had the chassis already from Martin, but the tower was still from the USSR, than came manufacture the towers in Dubnici nad Vahom.

1.td přezbrojovala in the order of 1.tp Strašice, 2.tp Townsville, tank battalion 3.msp Louny and in the end 21.tp Žatec. In Žatec it was in the order of 3.tpr, 1.tpr and as the last 2.tpr and from him 6.tr I at that time commanded.

First tanks for 2.tpr/21.tp I took over the used in Vyškov (4 pcs), it was the a's, but at that time began Martin to produce M-ka, therefore these 4 tanks then he was somewhere passed, I don't remember where. 12 the T-72M I personally took over in Martin. Therefore 2.tpr/21.tp was at 1.td only armed with tanks T-72M.

The original T-72A had on the sides of the ears, but the photos with them too much will not, because in the field as it is on the Doupově slightly ulamovaly and therefore nevozily, so how nevozily or covers on the T-72M. Side covers belts were made of aluminum alloy and rubber. I remember that one of the first M-ek went into the mud at the driver training centre in Žatec and now we are a few of the hangers broke off. Even the fenders we took off and made a replacement out of sheet metal, because in the warehouses were not, and their destruction is not possible to replace.

Wrecking VT-72 was the construction of the Martin, not with the Russian counterpart, nothing to do, it was a custom design. Troop tests are done at 21.tp in Saaz..

Thanks for the interesting information. But are you sure that the original T-72 delivered from the USSR with an optical rangefinder were upgraded with a laser rangefinder? I have been in 1982, moved from Přáslavic (33. tank regiment) to Slovakia to Kežmaroku (60. tank regiment). Training in Přáslavicích were then designed the new T-72 with laser range finder and the original soviet with stereoscopic rangefinder remained at the training in Slovakia (even if, in the course of the reorganization and division 1989-1992 probably somewhere again moved)..

Podľa mojích informácii sa ešte jeden pôvodný T-72 so stereodiaľkomerom dovezený zo ZSSR tzv."ruslana" nachádza na Slovensku

Citace - Hasaghk :

According to my information there is still one original T-72 with a stereo rangefinder imported from the USSR called "ruslana" in Slovakia

Wouldn't it be in the collection of the Military History Museum Piestany? Something bugs me, when I was there about 10 years ago the guide mentioned that they had all the versions that were in Czechoslovakia.

EDIT JP: Is that the version that's in my photos from the museum?

That's also an option. As far as I know, one of the very first imported ones is also found in the VTSU in Zagorje
.
When I was at VTSU in 2016 they also mentioned to us that one of the tanks they have there is originally from a Soviet factory. It should be this one (it's just a cutout from a photo).

T-72M vyrábané u nás ho už nemajú a tá časť veže vyzerá inak.
