Crotale NG
French anti-aircraft missile system manufactured since 1989 by Thomson-CSF
The Crotale (Rattlesnake) NG (abbreviation of nouvelle generation) is designed primarily to destroy air targets flying at altitudes between 10 and 6,000 m.
The system is in the arsenal of, among others, the French Air Force (on a 6x6 wheeled chassis), the Finnish Army on a SISU WA 185/PASI chassis and the South Korean Army has installed it on a Deawoo tracked chassis.
The Crotale NG is also produced in a fully automatic (container) version and a version adapted for mounting on an 11t chassis, such as the FVS M987 tracked chassis, which is an MLRS chassis. It consists of a turret assembly and an armoured container. The turret system weighs about 4 t - it contains 2 blocks each containing 4 launchers for the VT 1 PLRS, radar antennas, environmental reconnaissance sensors, a TV camera and thermal imaging system for "my stranger" identification, an optoelectronic coordinator to track the missile and electric actuators which allow targeting at 285°/s and 57°/s aiming speeds.
The container houses operator stations, electronics and radar blocks. The interior of the container is equipped with air conditioning and protection against the effects of WMD
The TSM 2630 surveillance radar monitors the area up to 20 km ( with simultaneous observation of 8 targets), the target interception range is 11 km. The tracking head (adapted from the naval version of Crotale), consisting of an antenna and a radar with a range of 18 km, together with optoelectronic systems that guarantee a range of up to 15 km in good visibility, is used for target and missile tracking. Information from all sensors is collected in the main computer where it is analysed. This solution increases the safety of the system and, in particular, the resistance to jamming agents.
The VT1 control system is powered by solid propellant and the warhead is a three-blade rupture with a shock-approach igniter .
The missile is controlled by radio commands, the stabilization is provided by decomposable stabilizers, the control by dynamic gases.
The system can operate independently or as a battery of 4 to 6 systems and is controlled by a command vehicle.
