The M109A5 is an upgraded version of the M109A4, compared to the M109A2 version, it has a new howitzer, an improved crew protection device to protect the crew from the effects of WMD and other modifications.
The turret is located at the rear of the hull, the engine-gear compartment at the right front. The driver sits in the left front of the hull. The turret has a full 360° measurement and the howitzer's bearing ranges from -3° to +75°. In addition to the self-propelled howitzer, the M-109 artillery system must include an ammunition vehicle, referred to as the M-109 ADS.
Pictured here is the M-109 ADS vehicle of the US KFOR contingent.


The vehicle is equipped with a boom for loading/unloading pallets of cartridge containers (ejection charges) and the actual artillery shells, as well as a conveyor belt for moving/transporting ammunition to the howitzer. The speed of the conveyor should ensure smooth delivery of ammunition to the M-109 vehicle while maintaining the combat rate of fire.
