WM 21 Sólyom

Development of this sesquiplane, intended for armed front-line reconnaissance, began in 1936. The design was based on the WM 16 Budapest trainer. The first take-off is dated 1937, military trials took place in 1938, and production of the first series started in the same year. They were produced in three factories: WMM,Csepel (43 pcs); MWG,Győr (42 pcs); and from December 1939 at MÁVAG, Budapest ( 43 pcs). The last aircraft, already with a more powerful engine, left the production line in 1942. They took part in combat deployment during the attack on Yugoslavia and Russia. From 1942 onwards, due to insufficient performance for frontline service, they were used only for training pilots and crews.
The first combat flight of type WM 21 was made, without the knowledge of their superiors, by pilot Gyenes János százados (captain) and observer Földessy Gyula főhadnagy (lieutenant) on 28 August 1940. In response to an attack by a Romanian Heinkel He 112B on a Hungarian Caproni Ca-135 over Debrecen on 27 August 1940, they attacked the Romanian airfield near Szatmárnémeti with three 10kg bombs, damaging the hangar. During the raid, their aircraft was hit by fire from the ground and the pilot was wounded during an emergency landing on Hungarian territory.
