Hellmuch joined the army in 1908. In the first world war was 3.9.1914 injured. After recovery, he got to 136. infantry regiment, which was deployed on the Russian front, where also 23.9.1915 fell into captivity, from which he returned to 27.2.1918. After the war he held various command positions, at the beginning of the second world war he was promoted to major general and in 1941 on was to hold. The beginning of the second world war it caught as supply officer of the German 7. army. 25. October 1939 then ensures the supply of the army Group B. As commander of 23. infantry division participated in the French campaign, then the attack on the Soviet union (battles around Minsk, Brest, Smolensk, Vyazma and last effort in the battle of Moscow in November 1941). After a few months became the commander of the 141. the backup division. In 1944 he became the commander of the 243. infantry division stationed on the peninsula of the Cotentin in Normandy, where it also caught the allied invasion 6.6.1944. 17.6.1944 tried to escape from the port Cherbourg through the american lines, but was attacked by allied aircraft and killed. Posthumously (2.9.1944) he received the Knight's cross of the Iron kříze.
He is buried at the cemetery in Orglandes, block 22, grave 216.
uvadi, ze byl zabit v boji (coz zrejme neni pravda, podle jineho zdroje padl pri utoku letadel zrejme na jeho vuz pri pokusu zmizet skrz americke linie) u Canville, coz je zhruba 10km jizne od Cherbourgu. Vzhledem k postupu spojencu poloostrovem by stalo za to presne dohledat, zdali v teto oblasti jiz byli americke jednotky ci nikoliv (domnivam se ale, ze byly o kus dale jiznim a jihovychodnim smerem).
