Shipboard history of the escort carrier Kaijo

In the late 1930s, the carrier Argentina Maru was taken over by the Japanese Navy. She was used to transport troops and material. After Midway, however, the need for an increase in the number of aircraft carriers grew, and so the conversion of many of the available ships began, among them the Argentina Maru - newly the Kaijó.

The conversion mainly entailed the construction of a hangar and flight deck, which were built on the original ship's deck. The propulsion units were replaced and the funnel exhaust was rebuilt according to Japanese standard (the funnel led out on the side of the ship and curved downwards).
The armament consisted of 127 mm guns, and later stations for 25 mm cannons and 28 mm rocket launchers were added. The hull did not undergo significant refitting.

She performed mostly transport duties, due to the lack of armour she could not be deployed in direct combat. Her deck planes also carried out anti-submarine patrols.

On 24 June 1945, she was discovered off Etajima Island by British Federation TF-37 deck planes. Later that day, a combined raid was made on Kaijo, and she was hit by a single bomb. A second attack wave severely damaged the ship, and she ran aground when attacked by American aircraft. Repairs were not begun as the war soon ended; she was subsequently scrapped.
