On 1.11.1941 specifications for a new super-heavy tank of 70 tons weight category were commissioned. The new tank was to have front armour 140mm thick, the sides were to be 100mm thick. Propulsion was to be provided by a 1,000 hp Daimler-Benz engine, which was used to power a fast torpedo boat. The crew was set at five men. The armament was not specified.
The Krupp company presented its design VK 70.01 with a 105mm gun with barrel length L/70 on 21 January 1942. The WaPrüf 6 informed Krupp that the newly developed Maybach HL 230 engine was to be used, which was scheduled to start production in 1/1943. In 2/1942, due to the unfavourable situation on the Eastern Front, it was decided to produce two prototypes with similar specifications to the Tiger project, i.e. 100mm frontal armour and 80mm side armour. The project was also to use the same chassis components. [Kruppwas awarded contract SS 006-6307/42 for their production. It was envisaged that the first prototype would be complete with turret, the second was to have only a ballast simulating the weight of a turret instead of a turret. It was planned to start serial production immediately before the prototypes were thoroughly tested. In 4/1942, the official designation of the VK 70.01 project was changed to Pz.Kpfw.Löwe ("Lion"). Between 2/1942 - 5/1942 several design proposals were made. See the table above for the differences in planned specifications.
The project was stopped by [url=/topic/view/14207/]Adolf Hitler on 5/18/1942. This was due to parallel work on the Tiger heavy tank, whose development was further along than work on the Pz.Kpfw.Löwe. The official cancellation of work on the tank's turret was sent to Krupp on 20 May 1942.
