General George Smith Patton jr.
(11/11/1885 - 12/21/1945)
This pioneer of tank combat in the US military and an assistant in the establishment of the American tank doctrine was born on November 11, 1885 in Sa Gabriel, California. His entry into the army was not a surprise, as his family had a long military history.
He studied at the Military Academy in West Point. In 1909 he successfully completed it and joined the cavalry. Here he manifested himself as a great member of the cavalry. He wrote a handbook on fencing with a saber.
His first deployment dates back to 1916 in Fort Bliss, where as a lieutenant under the leadership of John Pershing helped suppress the Pancho Villa uprising.
When the 1st Expeditionary Corps was sent to Europe in 1917, he was commander of the 1st Tank Unit. He later taught at the Langres Tank Crew Training School. The first deployment of his tanks was in 1918 at Saint Mihiel. He receives the Meritorious Military Cross for his services in Europe.
In 1942, he trained American tank units in the California desert. He also participated in the landing of Allied troops in North Africa. After the German attack on Kasserine, he took command of the 2nd Corps, with which he would help destroy German troops in Tunisia.
As a colonel general, he commanded the 7th US Army in 1943 during the battles for Sicily. He recharges Palermo and a few hours before Montgomery, conquers Messina. In Sicily, however, he insults two soldiers in a field infirmary and accuses them of treason. He lost command of the army after this incident.
In 1944, a month after D-Days, he took command of the 3rd Army and soon broke through the German defenses and managed to encircle 100,000 German soldiers. In December 1944 he is with the 32nd Army in the Metz area. After the German attack in the Ardennes, it turned north quickly to stop the Germans and liberate the besieged city Bastogne.
During the advance through Germany, he manages to encircle the Ruhr Basin. His advance is based on a rapid tank advance, so the German army had trouble building a defense. In April, he crossed the border into Czechoslovakia. He managed to liberate many places, including Pilsen. An agreement with the Russians prevented him from liberating Prague.
Shortly after the end of the war, he declared that Russia's new enemy was Russia. This cost him his place and he takes over the position of governor in Bavaria.
However, he was seriously injured in a car accident in Mannheim on 9 December and died in Heidelberg on 21 December of that year. He is buried in the American war cemetery in Luxembourg.
