A derivative of the legendary French Renault FT tank of 1924. The new tank was created out of the need to modernize its predecessor, with the tank being fully autonomous for longer moves without the need for tank transporters. It was to have a more durable chassis and a more powerful engine. The Renault NC 1 used a new type of metal tracks. The tank had a turret mounted from the FT.
The prototype tested achieved higher performance than the old Renault FT, but due to the French Army's new requirements for a new tank, this type did not make it into series production for France. However, the tank was offered to foreign buyers under the designation "NC Model 1927". In addition to the NC 1 prototype and one factory demonstrator, one tank each was purchased by Sweden (1928 - Swedish designation FM/28) and Poland (1928). The Japanese bought a total of 23 tanks of this type (Japanese designation "Otsu-gata Sensha").
At the same time as the NC 1, a prototype Renault NC 2 was produced, which used the flexible tracks of the Kégresse system.

NC 1 in the Japanese Army (Otsu-Gata Sensha)
The Japanese, in gaining familiarity with modern concepts in tank warfare, purchased 23 tanks. In Japan, it bore the name Otsu-Gata Sensha. The machines were to take part in combat in China in the early 1930s. As with the Poles and Swedes, design flaws became apparent. However, the Japanese had no choice but to serve despite their shortcomings. The Japanese were keen to modify them. They replaced the original engine with a Micubishi engine (75 hp, diesel ?). The armament was also changed, with the original gun being replaced by a more powerful Japanese Type 11 infantry gun of 37 mm calibre. Some tanks were equipped with Japanese Type 3 machine guns of 6.5 mm calibre instead of cannons.
Later, as part of the 1st Tank Regiment stationed in Kurume, they were used to train new tankers.
