"This Victoria Cross is awarded for courage and determination in action against the enemy. On Thursday morning, February 12, Lieutenant-Commander Esmonde commanded a squadron of Fairey Swordfish Fleet Air Arm aircraft to attack German battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen These ships, heavily protected by an escort of support vessels, had already sailed into the Straits of Dover and had to be attacked by this squadron before reaching the shallows northeast of Calais. Early in the morning, Esmonde and his squadron of six Swordfish headed for the enemy and after about ten minutes he was attacked by a large formation of German fighters. Esmonde lost contact with his fighter escort and in the ensuing action, all aircraft of his squadron were damaged. Onde flew, resolutely and cold-blooded, with no hope of success, against the deadly fire from the battle cruisers and the escort that destroyed his lower wing. Unbroken, he continued to lead his squadron through the hell of this fire, straight to his goal. He was eventually shot down, but his squadron carried out a brave attack on the enemy, in which at least one torpedo hit a German battle cruiser and from which no squadron aircraft returned. His great courage and determination will live in the traditions of the Royal Navy and will remain in the memory of future generations as a great deed. "
