Captain Robert Edward Dudley Ryder
captain of a motor torpedo boat
winner Victoria Cross

Citation for decoration Victoria Cross -

"for great courage in the attack on St. Nazaire. He commanded a group of small ships in an attack on a heavily protected port and led the destroyer HMS Cambeltown
into intense direct fire at short distances. Although the main goal of the expedition, the location of HMS Cambeltown in the dry dock gate, had already been met, Captain Ryder remained at the site of the ongoing operation, evacuating the men from
HMS Cambeltown and attacked resistance points and weapons on the coast, remaining exposed in heavy fire for an hour and sixteen minutes and did not retreat until he was sure that his ship could no longer be used to rescue any member of the Commandos who was still on shore.
Then his motor torpedo boat, now full of dead and wounded, could still survive and try to escape through the intense barrier of fire, which was almost a miracle. "
