High performance combined with practicality was the objective of Eiji Sekiguchi chef designer of the aircraft department of Kawanishi when he began design of the K-7A transport seaplane in December 1923, one month after the completion of the K-6. The first example of the new aircraft, the K-7A Transport Seaplane was completed in November 1924, demonstrating both good performance and handling and it was markedly German in appearance. Passenger seats were located at the centre of gravity in a cabin forward of the two tandem open cockpits. In appearance, this aircraft was more refined than previous designs and was considered very advanced for Japan.
The K-7A entered service on Nippon Koku's service between Osaka and Fukuoka in January 1925, mainly carrying airmail rather than passengers. The K-7A proved successful in service, one carrying mail from Fukuoka and Shanghai, China, a distance of over 590 mi.

History of the aircraft:

K-7A Cargo Floatplane
Kawanishi's chief designer, engineer Eiji Sekiguchi, began work on the K-7A floatplane project one month after the completion of the K-6 floatplane, in December 1923. The new aircraft was a semi-self-supporting monoplane with a strong wing profile, and the inter-wing struts were very simple. The airframe was all-wood, canvas-covered. In appearance, this aircraft resembled a German design and was considered, by Japanese standards, a very advanced design. The first aircraft was completed in November 1924 and subsequent flight tests showed very good flight characteristics. A total of ten of these seaplanes were built, one in 1924, three more the following year, four aircraft delivered in 1926 and the last two in 1927.
The new seaplanes were mainly used by Nippon Koku K. K., a member of the Kawanishi group of companies.
If we compare the successful K-7 with the unsuccessful K-5, we find that the K-7 had a wing area that was approximately 50% smaller. Passenger seats were located in the center of gravity of the aircraft and the crew sat in two open cabins behind the passenger cabin.
In January 1925, the K-7A began flying on the regular Nippon Koku K route. K. between Osaka and Fukuoka on the island of Kyushu, here the planes carried mostly mail and very few passengers. This service continued until 1929, when the state-owned Nihon Koku K. K. Yuso was replaced by Nippon Koku K. K owned by Sibei Kawanishi, this company was dissolved. During its service, the K-7 was given many other tasks, and the K-7 carried them out without fail, achieving great success. For example, in November 1925 it won a prize in a competition around Lake Biwa, and in May 1926 a K-7 successfully carried mail between Fukuoka and Shanghai (a distance of over 600 km). In October 1926, three K-7s made the journey from Osaka via Fukuoka and Mokpo (Korea) to Shanghai. One aircraft was lost at Mokpo, the other two reached Shanghai. The flight from Mokpo to Shanghai took 3.66 hours. Only one aircraft returned to Osaka, and one made an emergency landing at the Goto Islands (Gotō-rettō) on the return.
