Brief history:

This was the first aircraft design in 1932, the company then embarked on a project for a small passenger aircraft to fly on the Tokyo-Osaka route. The plan was to have a top speed of 200km/h, to be easy to manufacture and to have very low operating costs due to simple and low maintenance. The crew was to consist of one pilot and three passengers. The aircraft was to be able to operate from small and unprepared airfields.

It was essentially a copy of the British de Havilland Fox Moth, the difference being in the powerplant, the Japanese equipped their aircraft with their own 150hp Gasuden Jimpu radial engine. The Japanese had the opportunity to examine the British design when the Mitsui & Co engineering department imported three Fox Moths, the machines were intended for sale in Japan. Two of the aircraft were purchased for the Army Air Force through the Aikoku-Go collections and were used by the Army as small ambulance aircraft. Gasuden also acquired one aircraft after previous negotiations.

The designation KR-1 was short for Kogata Ryokaku-ki (small transport aircraft). The aircraft had a typical de Havilland design - an all-wood airframe made of spruce, covered with plywood and fabric. However, this construction required skilled craftsmen familiar with working with this wood. The undercarriage was designed to be interchangeable, either a wheeled undercarriage could be used, or two metal floats could be attached, which were manufactured by the Deruta shipyard in Chiba City.

The first prototype was flown at Tachikawa on 23 December 1933, piloted by Mansaku Akaike, and the flight was made with satisfactory results. It was first shown to the public on 27 January 1934 at Haneda Airport, near Tokyo, with float landing gear on 15 March 1934.
The aircraft was called Chidori-go (Bullet bird). With a float landing gear, the Chidorigo could only take off on calm water and its carrying capacity was reduced to two passengers.
A total of seven aircraft were built. Three KR-1s, including a prototype, with civilian designations J-BBJI, J-BBMI, J-BBNI, were operated by Nippon Koku Yuso Kenkyusho in Sakai, near Osaka, and flew on the regular Osaka-Shikoku and Osaka-Shirahama routes. Two more aircraft were delivered to the Taiwan Kokubo Gaikai (Taiwan Volunteer National Defense) and two more flew with the Manchurian Coast Guard at Eikou.
