At a meeting between Oberbaurat Kniepkamp and Krupp's chief engineer Wölfert on 15 September 1939, Krupp was tasked with the development of a new medium tank in the 20-tonne weight category. It was to replace the Pz.Kpfw.IV. Due to the specifications given, it was not possible to use the Schachtelllaufwerk chassis with interlaced running wheels, which was preferred at the time. Six rolling wheels suspended by leaf springs were to be used. Torsion springs were discarded to save space in the hull, because of the problematic design of the shock absorbers and the overall ease of maintenance in the event of damage to the chassis. A meeting between the company management and WaPrüf 6 on 28.10.19 resulted in specifications for the diameter of the running wheels (830 mm) and the type of tracks used (Kgs 61/400/120). In 11/1939 the project was renamed from VK 20.01 (IV) to VK 20.01 (BW), in 12/1939 to B.W.40. On 13/12/1939 the specification was changed for the thickness of the frontal armouring, which was changed from 30 mm to 50 mm. The hull outline resembled Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf.D. On 4 January 1940, three hulls were ordered, two of which were to be made of armoured steel and one of unarmoured steel. Completion of the first prototype platform was planned by the end of 1940. The project was stopped on 16.5.1940. However, the development programme for the new medium tank continued with further projects VK 20.01 (K), VK 20.02 (K) and VK 23.01 (K).
