Korunní kolonie Hong Kong [1843-1997]

Crown colony Hong kong
Hong Kong Crown Colony

On January 20, 1841, Captain Charles Elliot declared the British claim to Hong Kong. The formal confirmation of the claim was approved by the Chinese officials by the Peace of Nanking on 29.08.1842 and as early as 26.06.1843 Hong Kong became a royal colony. By the Beijing Convention of 24.10.1860 the Kowloon Peninsula and Stonecutters Island became part of the colony (already on 04.02.1861 the ceded territory was annexed by the British). Further expansion of the colony followed on 01.07.1898 - 230 islands and the territory north of the Kowloon Peninsula. These areas were leased to Britain for 99 years. On 20.02.1900 Britain formally ended Chinese jurisdiction in Kowloon. After the outbreak of World War II, Hong Kong was occupied by Japan (25.12.1940-16.08.1945) and there was a brief period of military administration after the end of the war (28.08.1845-01.09.1946).

On 19.12.1984, an agreement was reached between the PRC and the UK to return Hong Kong to Chinese administration (implemented as of 01.07.1997)
