At a conference at Adolf Hitler's held from 1 December 1942 - 3 December 1942, it was decided to build a 10 piece verification series of flame-throwing self-propelled guns based on the StuG III Ausf.F8. The vehicles were from early production in 10/1942 (the vehicles bore serial numbers from Fgst.Nr. 91434-91460). Instead of a gun, a flamethrower of Schwade design was to be mounted, of 14 mm calibre. The propellant mixture was injected by a pump driven by a two-stroke DKW engine (1.1l capacity) and the range(elevation) was a maximum of 53-55 metres. Nine machines were delivered in 5/1943 and the last tenth unit the following month. The machines ended up in the school unit Panzertruppenschulle I. One machine was destroyed by fire and then sent in for repairs in 7/1943. It returned to the unit in 9/19/1943. Serial production was not started and these machines did not take part in combat. At the time of acute need for conventional fighting machines, the machines were sent to the factory where conversion to conventional assault guns with StuK 40 L/48 gun took place (7 pieces in 2/1944, 1 piece in 3/1944 and the last 2 pieces in 4/1944).

From the fenders it looks like a StuG III Ausf.E/StuG III Ausf.F (?) platform. This means that the information about using only the 8./Z.W. platform is not correct. According to the photo it is a platform 7./Z.W. Resp. from the photos I have the impression that it is not a full vehicle, but a kind of mock-up perhaps on the platform Pz.Kpfw.III.
