The U.S. Senate unanimously confirmed Barack Obama intelligence chief CIA Leon Panetta, a 73-year-old Democratic Party leader, as defense secretary. He is to replace the outgoing Robert Gates. The change comes as Barack Obama announces the withdrawal of thousands of troops from Afghanistan.


Leon Panetta's successor as director CIA will be David Petraeus, the current commander of allied forces in Afghanistan.
