Akashi was completed too late to intervene in the First Sino-Japanese War. Her first overseas assignment was between June-July 1900, when she accompanied troops and supplies during the Japanese occupation of Tientsin during the Boxer Rebellion. She was then assigned as escort to ships laying the first undersea telegraph cable between Sasebo and Incheon in Korea.
At the start of the Russo-Japanese War (1904-5) she was stationed in Korea, participating in the Battle of Chemulpo Bay and the Battle of Port Arthur as part of the 2nd Fleet. In 1915 she was assigned to coastal patrol duty, but as part of the 1st Fleet she took part in the Battle of Tsushima, where she played a major role in the sinking of the Russian armoured cruiser Dmitril Donskoy.
The future Prime Minister Suzuki Kantaro served as captain on Akashi in 1908-9. In World War I, Akashi participated as part of the 2nd Fleet in the fight against Germany at the Battle of Tsingtao. She was later assigned to Singapore and patrolled the shipping lines between Borneo and the Straits of Malacca.
From 13 April 1917 she was assigned to Malta to the Second Special Squadron (eight destroyers) under the command of Rear Admiral Sato Kozo. Their task was to protect the transport of Allied forces to the Mediterranean. After the war, she was reclassified as a 2nd class coastal protection ship from 1 September 1921. She was removed from active service on 1.4.1928 and destroyed as a target for depth bombardment south of Izu Oshima on 3.8.1930.
