After four years of the Prague grammar school, he began studying at a three-year military high school in Hranice na Moravě. After that, he completed a three-year study at the Military Technical Academy in Vienna at the Artillery Department. Which he successfully completed on August 18, 1891 and enlisted as Artillery Lieutenant of the Austro-Hungarian Army. He replaced many monarchy crews. He later completed the Higher Artillery Course in Vienna. In 1914 he completed an aerial observation course. With the outbreak of war, in the rank of Oberstleutnant, he joined the staff of the artillery brigade, first on the Russian front and later on the Italian front. On September 26, 1916 he was appointed commander of all air companies of the 11th Army in Trento, Italy. A month later, on October 21, 1916, he was appointed commander of all air companies of the 5th Army on the Soča front in Italy. Despite his senior staff and senior age, he participated in combat flights as an observer. On October 14, 1916, he even shot down an Italian plane with a pilot Corporal Julius Kowalczik. On November 25, 1916, together with the then pilot Oberleutnant Godwin Brumowski had to make an emergency landing behind his own lines after the attack of Italian fighters probably from the 77th Fighter Squadriglia. Less than a year later, during a bombing raid on Venice, his plane was shot down and the pilot made an emergency landing with him at sea, where he was captured by the crew of a torpedo boat.
He was released from Italian captivity on February 9, 1919. On March 4, 1919, he applied to join the Czechoslovak Army. He was accepted and from April 1920 to March 1921 he served as head 13. department of MNO (aeronautical department). He was transferred to retirement on March 31, 1921, after resigning after protracted disputes with the French military mission.
Comment: On May 1, 1915 he was promoted to the rank of Oberst. He was accepted into the Czechoslovak Army with the rank of colonel.
