R-23/AA-7 Apex


PL missile designed for ambush targets at medium distances from the front and rear hemisphere. The first version was introduced in the USSR together with Mig-23 aircraft in 1972. The missile was designed as the main offensive armament of the "twenty-three." Its counterpart in the USA was the type AIM-7 Sparrow.


To use this missile, it was necessary to equip the machine with a radar RP-23 Sapphire, which carried just Mig-23.


Later, the missile was modernized and introduced under the designation R-24. It was used on machines Mig-23MLD.

In MS. aviation PLŘS introduced together with aircraft Mig-23MF and Mig-23ML at the turn of the 70s/80s. those years. Both of these versions could carry two missiles on underwing hangers APU-23. In general, there was always one R-23T and one R-23R.
