Method of firing: single shots and bursts
The body of the gun, along with the grip, is made of two, longitudinally split parts, which makes it easier to disassemble for cleaning and repair. The rifle has a dynamic, non-locking breech. It fires from an open bolt, the firing of the cartridge occurs when the bolt reaches the forward position. The M46's straight magazine holds 32 rounds. The rifle has diopter sights. A special safety feature of the weapon is a lever located behind the magazine well. If it is not depressed, the slide is locked, making one-handed shooting impossible.
The M46 model has a fixed wooden stock; the M49 model, produced from 1949, is already equipped with a folding shoulder rest, formed by a shaped steel tube and secured by a coercive spring. The M49-derived M50 model is distinguished by a new shape of the tension lever, cylindrical instead of flat, and the M53 model by a curved magazine with a capacity of 32 rounds and the possibility of attaching a bayonet.
In a tender issued by the British Ministry of Defence in 1951 to replace the Sten submachine gun, the Madsen M50 was the most serious competitor to the winning Pratchett submachine gun ( Sterling L2A1 ).
A lick-action copy of the Madsen in .45 ACP was produced in Brazil.
