BMP-3
The BMP-3 is a high mobility tracked armoured combat vehicle designed to transport personnel across the battlefield and destroy armoured targets and enemy live forces. Currently, the BMP-3 is the most heavily armed infantry fighting vehicle in the world.
The origins of the BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle date back to the late 1970s and early 1980s, when a decision was made to develop a qualitatively superior replacement for the BMP-1 and BMP-2 vehicles, which began to be introduced into the Soviet Army's arsenal at this time. A tangible result of the modernization efforts was the Object 688 prototype (based on the Object 685 light tank design), which joined trials in 1981. In the course of these trials, the vehicle's armament was radically transformed. The original turret resembling the turret of the German Marder was replaced by a new one, which consisted of the 2K23 weapon set (consisting of a 2A70 gun of 100 mm calibre and a 2A72 gun of 30 mm calibre) capable of firing the 9M117 [url=/topic/view/40134]9M117.
The modified vehicle was involved in military trials in Uzbekistan and the Siberian Military District in 1986. The powerful armament became a subject of fierce debate in military circles, as some officers considered it too powerful for a BVP-class vehicle. A far more serious problem, however, was the inept design of the swarm compartments. Despite these criticisms, in 1987 it was decided to introduce the Object 688 into the Soviet arsenal under the designation BMP-3.
Production began to ramp up very slowly and was further hampered by the gradual collapse of the Soviet empire in the early 1990s. Although BMP-3 equipped units are deployed primarily in Siberia, the total number of these vehicles in use by the Russian Army does not significantly exceed 100.
The vehicle chassis consists of six running wheels on each side, supplemented by three guide pulleys. The first, second and sixth pairs of running wheels have hydropneumatic shock absorbers. There is a tension wheel at the front and a drive wheel at the rear. The driver's station is located in the middle of the front part of the hull, and to his left and right sit two members of the swarm - machine gunners, who operate the two PKT machine guns located in the bow. The driver and both machine gunners have their own hatches with a hatch fitted with periscopes (the driver has five periscopes, the machine gunners one each).
In the center of the vehicle is a fully rotatable turret, which houses the commander's and gunner's stations. The main part of the turret is a 2A70 gun of 100 millimetres calibre with a smooth bore barrel. It has an aiming range of -6° to +60° and an ammunition supply of 40 rounds. Against live and unarmored targets it uses fragmentation ammunition, but the 2A70 also serves as a launcher for anti-tank guided missiles 9M117 with a maximum range of around 4,000 meters. The BMP-3 can carry six to eight of these. The 2A72 30 mm calibre automatic cannon with a cadence of 300 rounds/sec is carried in a common, two-plane stabilised block along with the 2A70. In addition, another machine gun PKT of 7.62 mm calibre is coupled with both guns.
The automated fire control system consists of a 1K13-2 gunner's sight for tracking ground targets, a 1PZ-10 commander's sight, a 1V539 ballistic computer, a 1D16-2 laser rangefinder (located above the 2A70 gun barrel), and a guidance unit for the 9M117 PTRS.
At the rear of the vehicle is an engine-gear compartment with fuel tanks. The powerplant consists of a water-cooled UTD-29 diesel engine with a maximum power of 368 kW. Above this compartment is the main transport compartment for five soldiers. Two are seated on benches back-to-back, while the fifth is seated in the centerline of the vehicle just behind the turret. Because of the considerable cramped nature of the entire landing compartment, soldiers must use both the rear double doors and the large two-piece hatch on the top of the hull when exiting.
The BMP-3 can move through the water using a hydrodynamic system with a pair of water jets. Of course, a filter-ventilation system is included, allowing the vehicle to operate in WMD-infested environments. The vehicle's defensive equipment is complemented by 81 mm calibre rear grenade launchers fired from a pair of triple 902V launchers.
Although the BMP-3 did not see a large-scale proliferation due to a lack of funding in the Russian military, it became quite a successful export item. The first and largest customer was the United Arab Emirates, which ordered a total of 448 examples, which were delivered between 1993 and 1997. The main difference from the Russian machines is the adaptation of the vehicles to desert conditions and the improvement of the fire control system associated with the installation of the French Namut sighting unit on the left rear turret. More or less the same design was ordered by Kuwait in a number of 55 units. Another user was Cyprus, which acquired 43 BMP-3s between 1995 and 1996. The last customer is South Korea, which received 30 BMP-3s as part of the Russian debt relief.
