The medal was awarded for three years of service in Great Britain (from the beginning of the war until 8 May 1945) or for six months of service in British territory or in countries where British soldiers were stationed and were attacked by the enemy. For troops overseas the period was extended to 15 August 1945 (the end of the war in the Pacific).
Some units needed as little as three months to qualify for the award.
