The Air Force announced that a Boeing C-17 transport plane with four people on board crashed yesterday near Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage.

Capt. Uriah Orland of the Air Force said information about the condition of the four people aboard the plane is unknown. He did not respond to a question about whether they were dead.

The plane belongs to the 3rd Wing, which is based directly at Elmendorf Air Force Base, and Capt. Orland said it was conducting a routine local training flight.

Orland further clarified that the crash occurred at 18:14 local time (AKDT (UTC-8)).

A large plume of black smoke had formed at the crash site and it looked as if a doomsday was about to occur.

Roger Herrera (Anchorage resident) saw the plane crash on his return from fishing as he was driving down Turpin Street with his wife.

"We saw it right in front of us - to be honest, my wife pointed it out to me so I could see what was happening in the air - and then all of a sudden a big fireball. Before I could reach for my camera to take a picture of it, it turned into a big black cloud of smoke rising," he said.

"By then I had reached the end of Turpin Street...I could see it was on the other side of the main road, so it must have been somewhere around the base:.

Capt. Orland further advised that more information would be forthcoming later on Wednesday.

"Four crewmembers aboard the Boeing C-17 that crashed July 28, 2010, at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage have died," a USAF spokesman said.


"We have four confirmed dead," said Lt. Gen. Karen Platt, a USAF spokeswoman.


The Boeing C-17 crashed Wednesday evening immediately after takeoff into a wooded area northeast of the airport. The fireball and plume of black smoke was clearly visible in the area.


Three of the four crew members were members of the Alaska Air National Guard, and the fourth was an active member of Elmendorf Air Force Base, local TV station KTUU in Anchorage reported, citing the USAF.


Lt. Gen. Dana Atkins said at a news conference on the air disaster that "...the aircraft was conducting a routine training flight that was also in preparation for the flight demonstration of the annual Arctic Thunder air show."


"In light of the accident", Atkins went on to say, "the USAF was considering whether to even hold the air show, which was to be attended by the Blue Angels and the Canadian Snowbirds".


The crash Boeing C-17 occurred in the wet and cloudy weather that prevailed over Anchorage at the time.


The worst aviation accident at Elmendorf Air Force Base occurred in September 1995 when an AWACS, sucked a flock of geese into its engines during takeoff. This aircraft was also conducting a training flight. All 24 crew members were killed.

Včera byla oficiálně potvrzena totožnost čtyř členů posádky havarovaného letadla Trosky Boeing C-17 Globemaster III 00-0173 Spirit of the Aleutians u Elmendorfovy základny vzdušných sil:

Posádka při nácviku na letovou ukázku nedodržela obálku letounu, převážně letěla pomaleji (ve finále asi o 6 uzlů), při asi o 2° větším úhlu náběhu, než je maximální limit letounu (60°), rovněž nedbala na varování o riziku ztráty vztlaku (přetažení). Nakonec došlo k přetažení, systém zabraňující přetažení i díky zásahům pilota do řízení (?), nemohl zvrátit situaci. Brzy byl úhel náběhu už 82° což je o celých 22° více než jsou limity letounu. V tomto okamžiku druhý pilot říká: "Not so tight, brother." Tedy "Ne tak těsně, bratře (brácho)." Nicméně v tomto okamžiku již letoun ztrácí po křídle výšku. Do toho je zaznamenáno, že bezpečnostní důstojník 3x hlásil "Watch your bank!" tedy "Hlídej si náběh!" (či sklon, úhel náběhu...). Letoun se zřítil v pravé zatáčce po křídle a nosem částečně dolů do zalesněného terénu kde explodoval a zabil celou posádku. Vyšetřování došlo k závěru, že za nehodou byla chyba pilota. Pilot porušil řadu obecně bezpečnostních omezení a omezení letounu, a to ve výšce kde náprava jakékoliv chyby nebyla možná. Jako zarážející bylo shledáno počínaní ostatních členů posádky, kteří nezasáhli do řízení. Rovněž došlo k evidentnímu ignorování řady varování leteckých bezpečnostních systémů.
