A Brief History of the 23rd Waffen-SS Mountain Division Kama (Croatian No. 2)
In June 1944, in accordance with the Führer's orders, the formation of the second division of Croatian-Muslim volunteers began, which Hitler dubbed Kama. The place of formation was transferred from the original Bosnia-Herzegovina to Hungary. Although the officers and non-commissioned officers were mostly Reich Germans, there were also Muslim officers and non-commissioned officers in their ranks who had previously served in the 13th Mountain Division Waffen-SS Handschar (Croatian No.1). The majority of the soldiers were Muslims, who were recruited through an intensive recruitment campaign that brought the division to its maximum strength of 8,000 to 9,000 men.
