On 22 June 1941, the division was stationed in the Orana camps (southwest of Vilnius). By the end of the first day of the Great Patriotic War, its troops had taken up defenses along the eastern bank of the Oranka River. However, on the morning of the following day, the division was ordered to withdraw to the northeast to the rear lines in the area of the Olkeniki town. The retreat was carried out under continuous attacks by enemy air and mechanized units of the enemy, the action of his diversionary groups. By the end of 23 June German tanks had overtaken columns of regiments on the march; in fact, the division was surrounded. Only the division headquarters, individual groups of soldiers, and two batteries of the antitank division succeeded in breaking through to Vilnius. Bypassing the city from the south, this group began to break through to the east.
