Colonel Ivan Trofimovich SELIVANOV

Ivan Trofimovich Selivanov was born in 1900 in the Belarusian village of Cencesichi.

In the Civil War in August 1918, he was conscripted into the Red Army and served in the Railway Guard Regiment, 98th Independent Railway Guard Battalion, later in the 110th Independent Railway Guard Battalion and in the 531st Regiment of Paramilitary Protection. He was wounded in 1919. From October 1923 he served as a platoon commander in the 52nd Black Sea Division of the OGPU troops. From April 1924 he commanded a platoon in a guard group in Rostov-on-Don, and from July he served in the 32. Novorossiysk Frontier Detachment as an instructor of the Rifle Training Command. From July 1927 he commanded a detachment in the 5th North Caucasus Regiment of the OGPU and from December 1930 the 48th Independent Dagestan Division of the OGPU.

From April 1932 he served as deputy chief of the training department and senior teacher of military disciplines of the 3rd Border School of the OGPU, from June 1935 as a teacher of military disciplines of the Higher Border School of the OGPU - NKVD, and from December 1940 as chief of the training department of the Novopetrogof Military-Political School of the NKVD. In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the border troops of the NKVD of the USSR he was 14.02.1941 awarded Order of Badge of Honour.

In the Great Patriotic War, in September 1941, he was appointed Chief of Staff of the 21st Motor Rifle Division of NKVD Interim Forces. On 15 June 1942, he was transferred to the post of deputy commander of this division (from August 1942 - it was renamed to 109th Rifle Division). In August 1942, he was the commander of the 4th Rifle Brigade for three weeks. On 31August 1942, he was appointed acting commander of the 11th Rifle Brigade, which, as part of the 55th Army, defended the right bank of the Neva River. On the same day, he was promoted to the rank of colonel. In September 1942, as part of the Nevish Operational Group, the brigade took part in the Sinjavin offensive. Assigned to the 86th Rifle Division, the brigade crossed the Neva River on 9 September 1942 to the Ivanovo bridgehead near Moskovskaya Dubrovka and moved on to link up with the troops of the Volkhov Front. However, as it suffered casualties, it was forced to retreat to its starting positions on the right bank of the river the next day. On 26 September 1942, the brigade with one battalion again began forcibly crossing the Neva River at the edge of the diversionary strike near the Teplobetonnaya plateau, directly opposite the well-fortified 8th Hydroelectric Power Station. The battalion managed to cross the river at the 1st Urban District, diverting the enemy from the main thrust where 70th Rifle Division was transported, but suffered heavy casualties. On 28 September 1942, the brigade crossed the right bank to the 70th Rifle Division, where it crossed to the Neva and fought on the line from the 8th Hydroelectric Power Station to Arbuzovo. By 15.00 on 29 September the village was occupied by the advance battalion, and all day on 30 September the brigade repulsed enemy counter-attacks. During these battles the brigade commander, Colonel I. T. Selivanov was killed.

He was posthumously awarded the Order of the Red Banner on February 10, 1943.
