In June 2016, a contract was signed between Qatar's Ministry of Defense and the Italian company Fincantieri S.p.A. for the construction of 7 military ships, which should be delivered to the Qatari Navy by 2024. The contract included, in addition to 4 Doha class corvettes and a helicopter carrier, also 2 patrol boats or small missile corvettes, referred to by the name of the first of them as the Musherib class. Outside of Fincantieri, MBDA, the company responsible for the weapon systems, is also involved in the construction of the vessels.
The Musherib-class patrol boats have a displacement of 745 tonnes, a length of 63.8 metres, a width of 9.2 metres and a draught of 5.65 metres and are based on the design of the Ghantoot-class (or Falaj 2) corvettes that Fincantieri built for the United Arab Emirates. Propulsion is provided by 4 diesel engines via 4 propellers. Max. speed of the vessels reaches 55.5 km/h and the range of the ship is 1500 miles at an economic speed of 27.7 km/h. The provisions on board allow a crew of 38 persons to operate autonomously for 7 days. Armament consists of four MBDA Exocet MM40 Block III anti-ship missiles, an 8-cell vertical launcher of the MBDA VL MICA anti-aircraft missile system, a 76mm/L62 Leonardo Super Rapid automatic gun, two 30mm Leonardo MARLIN-WS guns, and two 12.7mm machine guns. The Leonardo Athena airborne combat system is used for fire control and reconnaissance is provided by the Leonardo Kronos 3D radar. The ships are further equipped with an Elettronica electronic warfare suite and a Lacroix Sylena Mk 2 jamming system.
The first of the patrol boats began construction on 27.02.2019, was launched on 18.09.2020 and final trials have been underway since 25.03.2021. The official handover of the vessel from the manufacturer was carried out on 28.01.2022.
The second vessel Sheraouh (Q62), which was launched on 05.06.2021, is also expected to be delivered by the end of 2022.
