Ivan Nikolayevich Burakovsky was born on 12 April 1899 in the spa town of Pyatigorsk


During the Civil War, I. N. Burakovsky volunteered for the Red Army on 5 May 1918 and enlisted in the 1st Revolutionary Piatigorsk detachment, from September 1918 he was in the Ilyin detachment in the North Caucasus region. He took part with him in the suppression of the Tersk Cossack uprising. At the end of 1918, regiments were formed from separate detachments and I. N. Burakovsky was commanded to the 17th Rifle Regiment of the 11th Army. In its ranks he took part in the defense of Kislovodsk. In early January 1919 he retreated with the army through Mozdok, Kizlyar and on to Astrakhan. In the Astrakhan area he fell ill with typhus and was treated in the hospital in the village of Jandyki. After recovering, he was assigned to the 298th Rifle Regiment of the 34th Rifle Division. As a Red Army soldier of this regiment he fought at Astrakhan and in Stavropol.

In April 1920 the regiment in Derbent was renamed the 245th Rifle Regiment and I. N. Burakovskii. As part of the 28th Rifle Division, he advanced with it to Baku. From September 1921 to September 1922, he studied at the 4th Armavir Infantry Course in Baku, after which he was promoted to Red Commander and sent to continue his studies at the 21st Tiflis Infantry School. He graduated from the latter in September 1924 and was appointed platoon commander of the regimental school of the 2nd Caucasian Rifle Regiment of the 1st Caucasian Rifle Division. He took part in the suppression of the Menshevik uprising in Georgia, then was transferred to the Turkish border in Akhaltsik. Here he served as a company commander and deputy battalion commander. In November 1930, he was transferred to the Volga Military District in Kuybyshev as a company commander of the 102nd Territorial Rifle Regiment of the 34th Rifle Division. From October 1931 to June 1932 he served as Chief of the 4th Division Staff, then returned to the 102nd Rifle Regiment and served as Chief of Staff of the Rifle and Training Battalions.

In March 1934 he went with the regiment to the Far East to Birobidzhan. In May 1936, the regiment was renamed the 63rd Rifle Regiment and moved to the village of Platonovo-Alexandrovsk in the Khanty district, where it was assigned to the 21st Rifle Division. In August 1937, I. N. Burakovsky was approved as the battalion commander of this regiment. From September 1938 he served as deputy chief of staff of the 21st Rifle Division, and on 9 September 1938 he was appointed deputy commander of the 61st Rifle Division. Rifle Regiment in Spassk. At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, Lieutenant Colonel I. N. Burakovskii continued to command this regiment. On 31 August 1941, the regiment was transferred to the west as part of the division, where from 23 September 1941 the division joined the 7th Army and took up defences along the Svir River between Lake Ladoga and Lake Onega. On 3 February 1942, Lieutenant Colonel I. N. Burakovsky was appointed deputy commander of the 314th Rifle Division, which defended the Svir-Shamoksha section at the front.

On 29 May 1942, he was put in command of the 73rd Naval Rifle Brigade. In August, the brigade was transferred to the Volkhov Front with the 8th Army and participated with it in the Sinjavin Offensive. She defeated the German 132nd Infantry Division in heavy fighting for 13 days, after which she was withdrawn to the Army Reserve. The brigade was awarded the Order of the Red banner for the courage and heroism shown in combat. In January 1943, Colonel Burakovsky was assigned to the disposition of the Military Council of the 2nd Shock Army, and from 23 January 1943 took command of the 191st Rifle Division. He participated with it in the operation to break the blockade of Leningrad (Operation "Iskra"). Until 13 February 1943, the division fought fierce battles with the constantly counter-attacking enemy and tried to capture the previously lost Gontovaja Lipka - Sinjavino road, then it was withdrawn to the front-line reserve and moved to the Bolshoy Visherye area. From 28 February 1943, it was assigned to the 59th Army and fought defensive battles in the Gruzino area. On 16 October 1943, I.N. Burakovsky was promoted to the rank of major-general.

From 14 January 1944, the 191st Rifle Division, as part of the 14th Rifle Corps took part in the offensive operations Leningrad-Novgorod and Novgorod-Luga. She was awarded the honorary title "Novgorodskaya" (21.1.1944) for her decorations in the fighting during the liberation of Novgorod. On 26 January 1944, she was transferred to the 8th Army Leningrad Front. In February, it marched through Novgorod to the Khudovo area, then was moved to Narva, where as part of the 2nd Shock Army it fought heavy battles with the enemy defending along the western bank of the Narva River. Repeated attempts to forcibly cross the river were unsuccessful, after which the division was forced to go on the defensive. From 24 July 1944, as part of the same army, it took part in the Narva Offensive, the violent crossing of the river and the capture of the town and fortress of Narva. On 26 July 1944, the division was withdrawn from combat and relocated to the Gdova area. From 15 to 26 August 1944, its units broke through the enemy defenses between Peipsi and Pskov Lake and advanced 50 km (31 mi) by fighting, liberating more than 70 settlements and joining the right flank of the 67th Army 3rd Baltic Front.

On 26 August 1944, Maj. Gen. N. Burakovsky was relieved of command and in September was sent to study at the K. E. Voroshilov Higher Military Academy for advanced training courses for commanders. In 1945 he was transferred to the Higher Military Academy as a student of the main faculty. After the war, in January 1946, he took an accelerated course at the academy and was appointed deputy commander of the 119th Rifle Corps in Turkestan Military District in Stalinabad, as today's Dushanbe was called at the time. From October 1949, he commanded the 357th Rifle Division (renamed 61st Rifle Division from 4 March 1955), from July 1956 to 30th Rifle Division, and from June 1957 to 102nd Motor Rifle Division. On 23 June 1958 he was released to the reserve.

Died on 2 February 1970 in Makhachkala at the age of 70.
