Miles M.18

F. G. Miles continued attempts to create a replacement for M.14 Magister privately. In December 1938, therefore, a prototype M.18 with a de Havilland Gipsy Major engine with an output of 97 kW was created. Although Magister resembled in shape, he had little in common with him. The wing was brand new, rectangular in plan. The Ministry of Aviation did not show interest, yet three more prototypes were created, the first of which, the HM545, one with a 112 kW Blackburn Cirrus Major III engine. This machine also had the elevator shifted backwards and was handed over in May 1941 to the A&A in Boscombe Down. Tests showed better flight characteristics than Magister and better control, but in the end the type was not recognized as suitable for series production due to insufficient strength of the structure. The third prototype, t in 1942, was essentially the same, only with a removable cab cover. The last machine, M.18HL, was built at the request of RAE and was designed to test the wings designed for the design of the Supermarine S.12/40 aircraft.
