Combat action of March 31, 1940

On this day, the French fighter aircraft suffered one of the heaviest defeats, a total of fifteen machines of the type Morane-Saulnier 406 from GC III/7 from Vitry-le-Francois to free prosecution. Immediately after takeoff, several pilots had problems with oxygen masks.

The pilots had a fateful moment when the group commander descended to a height of 2000 meters to repair his mask. Unfortunately, the whole group followed him, losing altitude and being good targets for enemy aircraft.
Almost immediately after the group's descent, twenty-two enemies appeared
Messerschmitts Bf 109E from II./JG 53 "Pik As".

In the ensuing battle, seven French fighters were shot down or severely damaged, one pilot was killed and four were wounded.
Adj R. Chaveta was the first to be hit, his machine crashed in flames after the attack at Grostenquin, the pilot died. Another shot down was Sous Lt. Y. Rupied, who managed to jump out of a burning plane. He ended up with burns at Grostenquin.
Sgt. M. L'Hopital-Navarra also chose to parachute from a burning plane. He landed near the city Morhange.
Another French pliot, Sous Lt.M.Renaud, collected a hit to the left hand and managed to land in the field with a damaged machine. Sgt. Chef R. Morlot also managed an emergency landing, his plane was hit by twenty-two rounds of machine guns and four cannon rounds. The pilot escaped unharmed.

As I mentioned, two Czechs, Sgt. Bedřich Dvořák and Sgt. J. Bodina also fought in this battle. Dvořák's machine was hit by an incredible thirty-five hits from a machine gun and three from a cannon, however, despite his left hand injury, he managed to land at Vitry-le Francois. Pilot Sgt. Bodina was hit, but managed to land without injury. After this event, Bedřich Dvořák was taken to the hospital and subsequently received, as the second Czech pilot, a medal Croix de Guerre, award for his courage in the fight against a larger enemy.
