Stielgranate 41 was developed on the basis of knowledge of the German field commanders during the first months of the eastern campaign, that the standard anti-tank gun the 3.7 cm Pak 35/36 is outdated and fails to penetrate the armour of new soviet tanks. Therefore, the decision was made to develop for this cannon special cumulative grenade stabilized ailerons. The shot is put into the mouth of the barrel, where it swept "Hülsenkartusche" - a charge without a projectile only with a powdery filling.
