8x57 JR (JRS)

8 x 57 JR (JRS)

German hunting cartridge from the late 19th century (1910) with a projectile diameter of 8.09 mm (8.22 in). The 12.7 g projectile has a muzzle velocity of 705 (730) m/sec. Figures in brackets are for the JRS cartridge. Pictured is a JR cartridge manufactured by H. Utendoerffer, Nuremberg, Germany. A cartridge with a larger projectile diameter cannot be fired from a gun with a smaller bore = JS without serious danger to the shooter and the gun. On the right is the "daddy", a military 8x57 JS (7.92 x 57) cartridge. Photo by the author.
